P-Tech

The Network and Information Technology Program (P‑TECH) is a dual‑enrollment program that allows participating students to earn both a Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) high school diploma and an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree from Montgomery College—at no cost to students—while still in high school.

Students complete their high school graduation requirements while working toward the AAS degree over a four‑ to six‑year pathway. The AAS degree prepares students to meet industry expectations by developing technical knowledge, workplace competencies, and industry‑recognized certifications.

Students gain skills in areas such as software and hardware installation, network and security configuration, forensics fundamentals, virtualization, and cloud computing.

Core Experiences

  • Students complete a rigorous high school technical program including several college courses as part of the Program of Study.   Students also take college courses on Montgomery College’s Germantown campus to complete the AAS degree while in high school.
  • Students build technical skills and expertise while completing the microcomputer, networking and security program courses.  Students apply these skills in projects and certification exams as well as in internship experiences.
  • Students participate in Summer Bridge Programs and all activities of the Network Operations courses, including student computer refurbishment business and sales.
  • Students receive support through industry mentors and volunteers.

Program Goals

  1. Develop Foundational Knowledge and Skills: Equip students with a strong technical foundation that supports successful transition to upper‑level college coursework after graduation.
  2. Provide Hands-On, Real-World Experience: Engage students in authentic, project‑based learning and team‑based challenges that reflect real‑world work environments.
  3. Foster College, Career, and/or Community Pathways: Connect classroom learning to postsecondary opportunities, including college completion, career entry, and continued education.
