High School Graduation Requirements
Two credits in the same world language or 2 credits in American Sign Language may be used to complete Option 1 of elective credits required for graduation.
The goal of the World Languages program is to develop students’ linguistic and cultural competence in languages other than English. The ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with speakers of other languages is essential for success in an increasingly diverse and interconnected global community. As students develop proficiency in a world language and deepen their understanding of the values, perspectives, and practices of other cultures, they acquire the skills needed for meaningful communication and intercultural understanding.
World Languages courses must be taken in sequential order. With the exception of Level 1A, the prerequisite for each course is successful completion of the preceding course or placement through a local placement assessment.
High school graduates who can function in two or more languages are equipped with the knowledge and skills to participate successfully in college, careers, and a diverse 21st-century society. The Maryland Seal of Biliteracy is a diploma endorsement, authorized by Maryland law, that recognizes a student’s high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in one or more languages other than English. Montgomery County Public Schools offers a variety of world languages. While all secondary schools offer Spanish, the choice of other languages varies from school to school.
