Comprehensive Health Education in Kindergarten

Comprehensive health education standards and performance indicators are integrated throughout the elementary school experience. Kindergarten teachers implement a variety of health education learning activities to promote and practice wellness skills and strategies.

Key Concepts

• Mental and emotional health - identify positive communication forms; discuss emotions,feelings, and character traits
• Alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs - investigate the appropriate uses of medicine
• Personal and consumer health - explain methods of personal cleanliness and care of your body; demonstrate the steps of hand washing
• Family life and human sexuality - discuss family units and structures
• Safety and injury prevention - demonstrate calling 911; pedestrian, fire, and auto passenger safety; list personal identification information that is important when lost or separated
• Nutrition and fitness - identify sources of foods; describe the relationship between smells and appearance to food choices; list the food groups; analyze food and wellness; demonstrate good manners
• Disease prevention and control - demonstrate strategies to reduce the risk of becoming sick (wash hands, cover sneeze/cough, immunizations)
