Vision & Mission

Vision: The Chevy Chase Library Media Program envisions a vibrant, inclusive, and student-centered space that fosters curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of reading. Rooted in equity and cultural responsiveness, our program empowers students and staff to become critical thinkers, ethical users of information and technology, and confident contributors to their academic and personal communities.

Mission: Our mission is to support all learners by providing equitable access to high-quality, diverse literature, digital tools, and instructional resources. In collaboration with teachers and staff, the library media team promotes reading, information literacy, and digital citizenship. Through inquiry-based learning and anti-bias education, we help students develop the skills they need to succeed in college, career, and life.

Instruction

Students receive weekly instruction in the media center. Lessons range from literature appreciation, media literacy, and digital skills. The library media specialist collaborates with staff to develop and implement lessons integrating information literacy skills into curricular instruction through inquiry projects.

Programs

Black Eyed Susan Illustrations, Royalty-Free Vector Graphics ...

Each year students can participate in selecting the Black-Eyed Susan Award winners. Each year a new set of nominees is selected by school librarians from around the state. Students in Grade 3 listen, read and respond to Picture Book nominees during their library and classroom instruction. Students in grades 4 & 5 may choose to read 3 of the 10 nominees in the Graphic Novel and the Chapter Book categories. Voting takes place in April and the winner is announced in early May.

Students in all grades can participate in recess makerspace activities on a voluntary basis. Students sign up in advance and join during their recess block one day a week. They have the opportunity to create several STEAM projects throughout the year as well as open-ended exploration and creative play.

All students can volunteer to become school library helpers. These students come in several times a month to help keep the space neat, clean and organized. They are responsible for a section of the library as well as helping with daily tasks such as shelving, sharpening pencils, and delivering
book return bags.

Parent volunteers and SSL students are always welcome!

Chevy Chase News Network (CCNN) is our daily morning news show produced and hosted by 5 graders. Students are dedicated to writing, producing, and airing news for the entire school as well as preparing, researching, and filming special interest stories. The show is streamed live to the entire school every morning.

Being a library media specialist is my dream job. I received my Bachelor’s in Business from the College of William & Mary and a Master’s in Education from University of Maryland. After teaching for many years I pursued a new passion and got a Master’s in Library Media Sciences. When I’m not at work you can find me reading or listening to books all over the world.
