Please turn in forms on the SSL bulletin board outside the counseling office.

Students are sent a newsletter the first Friday of every month with SSL opportunities.

Summer is a wonderful time for students to engage in SSL opportunities and earn SSL hours towards meeting the 75-hour state graduation requirement! 

Middle school and high school students should continue earning SSL hours towards their SSL graduation requirement by engaging in SSL opportunities during the summer, including traditional in-person opportunities and select virtual/remote opportunities that follow the guidelines posted on the MCPS SSL webpage (www.mcps-ssl.org).

  • Teen Volunteers Needed for 2024 KEEN Prom

    Fri., May 17, 2024

    Join our teens and young adult athletes (ages 16 and up) for the 2024 KEEN Prom: Night of KEEN Stars.

    Be our KEEN athletes' buddies for a night of dancing, socializing and fun.

    The Prom itself will be from 6-8 pm.
    Teen volunteers will need to be on site at 5:15 pm for orientation and to be paired with a KEEN athlete.

  • The Office is Special Education (OSE) is having a Special Education Parent Community Resource Fair on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Montgomery Blair High School.  They are looking for student volunteers to earn SSL hours by supporting staff with set-up, support during the resource fair, and clean-up. The resource fair will take place from 10:00 a.m.– 1:00 p.m. There will be 2 shifts to support staff. Students are encouraged to choose one time slot to earn up to two hours of SSL. Students' may sign up for more than one time slot if they would like.  Students can sign up to volunteer using this google form.

  • 2024 Book Sale
  • KID Museum's Teen Volunteer Program is modeled on successful mentor and explainer programs in science centers across the country that cultivate youth as facilitators for a comprehensive educational experience. Teen volunteers: 

    • Work closely with Museum Educators to facilitate hands-on programming for children ages 4 – 14.
    • Are trained to teach STEM and art-related activities, and learn how to interact with museum visitors. 
    • Have the opportunity to enroll in professional development sessions at the museum, in various disciplines (such as woodworking or 3D printing).

    Annual Youth Voice Roundtable (March 12, 2024, 6:30-8:30 PM) - The Montgomery County Commission on Children and Youth is hosting a virtual opportunity for middle and high school students to share their perspectives on the following issues: civic engagement, career readiness resources, and LGBTQIA+ support. Students may earn 2 SSL hours for participating in this dialogue with the council. To learn more, please click here.

     

    C&O Canal and Potomac Riverside Cleanup - April 13, 2024 (9 AM - 12 PM) - Join us as we work together to clean up the Potomac River and its huge watershed area! Some of the many cleanup sites in our region are in your backyard! Students may earn 3 SSL hours for participating.     Earth Day SSL Opportunity (April 22, 2024, 9:30am - 2:00pm) - Build the first MCPS farm, and earn SSL hours while giving back to the Earth! Students may earn 4.5 SSL hours for participating. Breakfast, lunch, and transportation will be provided.To learn more, please click here.

    Student-to-Student Extracurricular Series - 10 SSL hours -- VIRTUAL/REMOTE – MCPS is seeking students interested in developing a video presentation with either a leadership moment or extracurricular skill to inspire, teach, and share with their MCPS peers and the greater MCPS community. Students may earn 10 SSL hours for successful submission of all items identified in the Student-To-Student Extracurricular Series Form

  • Choose Respect PSA Contest Due February 11, 2024

    The Choose Respect Video Contest is now open!

     

    • Students may earn 10 SSL hours for quality video submissions about healthy teen dating and the impact of teen dating violence.
    • All submissions will be reviewed by a judging panel, with cash prizes going to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, and Honorable Mention prizes going to 4th and 5th place. A “Fan Favorite” will also be selected from the Top 5 via public vote during the month of March and will receive an additional prize. The winning videos will be announced at  RespectFest on April 7, 2024 .

We sell wedding dresses to raise money for our twin parish in Haiti. Help is needed with managing the inventory, on-site social marketing,  and possibly assisting our sales team.

  • Do you want service hours done over the summer, rather than during the school year when you have sports, clubs, schoolwork, etc...? There are many flexible positions available during different times of the week. Completion of hours is satisfying, but it is also satisfying to help the elderly in our community who have worked so hard in life. Potential roles and application are attached.

  • Student-to-Student Extracurricular Series - 10 SSL hours -- VIRTUAL/REMOTE MCPS is seeking students interested in developing a video presentation with either a leadership moment or extracurricular skill to inspire, teach, and share with their MCPS peers and the greater MCPS community. Students may earn 10 SSL hours for successful submission of all items identified in the Student-To-Student Extracurricular Series Form
  • Arise and Flourish, is a nonprofit organization based in Montgomery County, Maryland that speaks to students in their health classes about substance abuse prevention by sharing stories from persons in long-term recovery. We bring together like-minded organizations and individuals to share ideas and information concerning the critical social needs created by alcohol and drug dependency in the Washington Metro area.  Arise Flourish advances specific solutions for those needs through prevention, education, fundraising, and issue awareness activities.  

    Students will need to visit the Montgomery County Volunteer Center (https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/volunteercenter/) and in the red box “Find a Volunteer Opportunity”, type in Arise and Flourish. Students will find the volunteer opportunity for the cycle of addiction video review project.  This SSL opportunity has been approved by the MCPS SSL department. Please let the students know NOT to use their MCPS email address as we will not be able to respond to them.

    Once students respond for the volunteer opportunity on the site, we will send the student/parent permission slip and detailed volunteer information. Please make sure the students do NOT use their MCPS email address as we will not be able to respond to them. Students will watch two video presentations provided by our organization. One video is our speakers who are people in recovery who share their personal experience. The second video is the presentation on the cycle of addiction which has information on how addiction happens. 

    Students have the ability to earn the following for the quality completion of this project: 

    1) Earn 1 SSL hour for watching one speaker video and the video for the cycle of addiction and completing one paper or artwork or;

    2) Earn up to 4 SSL hours for watching up to 4 speaker videos along with the one video for the cycle of addiction and completing 4 papers or 4 artworks.

    Students can watch anywhere from 1 - 4 speaker videos and the video for the cycle of addiction and completing one paper or artwork for EACH speaker video watched.

  • My name is Andrea Lopez, and I am a Clinical Research Assistant at the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders (CASD) at Children’s National. Our research program is seeking volunteers to assist with studies on autistic children and young adults.  A flyer describing the position is here. This is an excellent professional opportunity for students interested in psychology research, and we look forward to meeting capable and enthusiastic candidates.

The requirement for the Certificate of Meritorious Service is 240 or more hours.  Seniors must turn in these hours by March 30th in order to be considered for the award.
