Poolesville High School is ranked the #1 high school in the State of Maryland as recognized by Newsweek magazine (June 27, 2011). Newsweek magazine ranks all of the public high school in the United States each year based on the following six criteria:
• Graduation rate (25%)
• College matriculation rate (25%)
• AP tests taken per graduate (25%)
• Average SAT/ACT scores (10%)
• Average AP/IB scores (10%)
• AP courses offered per graduate (5%)
Montgomery County Public School system has two high schools on Newsweek magazine's list of the top 100 public high schools in the nation.
• Poolesville High School #64 in the United States
• Winston Churchill High School #91 in the United States
Newsweek magazine studied more than 1,000 top schools to determine the best of the best: the ones producing kids read for college – and life.
In addition, PHS has courses that are offered each year that are described as being beyond AP.
