CHRIS MATTHEWS MEMORIAL UNSUNG HERO SOCCER SCHOLARSHIP

Chris Matthews was a 1994 graduate of Magruder High School having played 4 years of varsity soccer at Magruder.  Chris was totally dedicated to soccer and loved to play the sport with his teammates and friends.  Serving as co-captain of the team for 2 years, he set the record at Magruder for the number of varsity starts.  He primarily played defense although he loved the opportunity to play midfield and assist in many goals.  During his tenure at Magruder, the team compiled a 28/15/5 record.  Chris continued his soccer career at Frostburg State University where he also served as team captain and was affectionately known as “Wheels.” It’s clear that soccer was an important part of Chris’s life which tragically ended on November 15, 2015.  It is recognition of his accomplishments and love of the game that the Chris Matthews Memorial Unsung Hero Scholarship Fund was established to provide financial support to offset a portion of college (professional school) costs for deserving “Unsung Hero” soccer players.

Scott Alexander Memorial Scholarship

Scott Alexander was the Head Coach of Men’s Varsity Soccer at Magruder High School from 2001-2006. During his first year as a varsity coach, his team won their first ever state championship.  In March of 2007, at the young age of 36, he lost a 22-day battle to brain cancer.  During the fall of 2007, his devastated high school soccer team used their loss as motivation and had an undefeated season in which they went on to win another state championship in his honor.  His former players established this scholarship, in his name, to help a graduating Magruder senior soccer player with the expense of textbooks at an accredited post-secondary educational institution.

Scott was a 1989 graduate from Shaler Area High School (located in the Pittsburgh, PA area).  He was Senior Class President and lettered in both varsity soccer and track and field.  He pursued his undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh where he held a soccer scholarship and played on the tennis team.  He continued to pursue his graduate degree from Duquesne University.  He went on to work as an Occupational Therapist for Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland and became a well respected high school varsity soccer coach at Magruder High School.

The Scott Alexander Memorial Scholarship benefits Magruder graduating seniors who:

  • Have outstanding character and have lettered in Varsity Soccer their Senior Year
  • Maintained a high grade point average
  • Participated in community service

To be considered for this scholarship students must:

  1. be an active member of Magruder High School Athletic Booster Club
  2. complete the attached application form
  3. obtain 2 letters of recommendation 1 from faculty member or a coach and 1 from a community service leader.
  4. write an essay describing how you were able to balance academics, athletics and community service

The scholarship will be advertised within the school through the guidance department and booster group.  Final selection of the scholarship winners will be decided by a scholarship committee consisting of Scott’s former players.
