School Renaming Petition Process
In February 2023, a petition was submitted to the MCPS Board of Education requesting that the Board consider renaming Col. Zadok Magruder High School. This petition was submitted, per MCPS Policy FFA: Naming School Facilities. The Board has accepted the petition and approved the next step in the renaming process, being further community engagement to determine the community interest in renaming the school.
In planning for this important conversation, Magruder HS sought out community members to participate on the Steering Committee for the renaming process. School staff, parents of Magruder students, MCPS central office staff, and local historians are on this committee. The Steering Committee is currently in the process of planning and organizing the community engagement process to review the renaming petition, determine the community interest in renaming the school, and ultimately preparing a report to the Board. This process will last at least through the Fall of 2023.
Community dialogues will be held in-person and virtually, and a special effort will be made to include Magruder students. As the committee makes plans for the community discussions, the Magruder community will receive further notice about the meeting(s) and we hope that all who are interested in this important discussion will attend.
