Math Department Week of Extended Learning Opportunities 2013
Math Extended Learning Week Opportunity 2013
During the 100 minutes students did an in depth lesson on trigonometry and the application of the tangent ratio. In this project, students looked at the history of trigonometry through the ages in its application to astronomy, architecture and navigation. Each group of students made a rudimentary sextant, called a clinometer. They then went outside and measured any tall item by using the clinometer and distances from the object.
Students will follow up by reflecting about the activity. For example, students can look at the statistical aspects of the activity as well. If their measures were different, what might account for that. They can look at a plot of our data to see if our measures are reasonable.
This is the type of learning/teaching that we will always STRIVE for, especially in light of the Common Core 2.0 starting next year with our algebra kids.
