National Art Honor Society's Memory Project, April 2008
The Memory Project is an initiative in which advanced high schools art students create original portraits for children who have been abandoned, orphaned, abused or neglected. Once finished, the portraits are delivered to the children and the children are invited to create drawings or write letters to send back to the art students. These children usually have few personal keepsakes and the portraits provide them with a memory of their youth and a way to honor their heritage. This is the second year that B-CC HS students have participated in this program. Rebecca Goodman, Vice President of NAHS, initiated this project at B-CC last year.
This year the portraits went to Mexico. The B-CC portraits went to children at Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH, www.nphmexico.org), a large home which serves youths who have been orphaned, abused, or abandoned. NPH has a school, a large dining area, a recreational area, and several bunkhouses for more than 400 individuals. A volunteer at the house, Chris, said of the project, "Here the kids have all of their basic needs met. We provide them with food, shelter, education, and the feel of a great big family. But it's activities like these that we need - fun and unique activities that give the kids personal attention and an opportunity to reflect on who they are."
Below are photos of the NAHS students with the portraits prior to their being sent to the children, and of the children on receiving their portraits. (Rebecca Goodman's and Abby Kathan's portraits had already been mailed at the time their photos were taken.)
