Explore Engineering

PLTW and Quince Orchard encourage students of all ages to explore and discover engineering.  In this effort, we encourage students to visit the following sites to learn more about engineering, specific career fields in engineering and get engaged in some of the online activities and tutorials.  Enjoy!

Summer Camps

  • At Alfred University in New York there are 6 different camps including ceramics and glass engineering, polymers and metals engineering, computer engineering, consumer chemistry, astronomy, and robotics engineering.  Details for each camp is available at http://www.alfred.edu/summer.
  • At Johns Hopkins University - Engineering Innovation offers as a 4 or 5 week summer program where students learn about engineering.  The course involves lab work, group projects, lectures and assignments all leading to solving real-world problems.
  • At the University of Maryland, CP there are 3 different camps offered, details for each is available online at http://cyber.umd.edu/education/pre-college
    • CyberSTEM Camp for Girls – for girls entering grades 7 & 8
    • Intermediate CyberSTEM Camp for Girls – entering grades 9 & 10
    • Cyber Defense Training Camp for all students entering grades 11 & 12

  • At Gettysburg College - High school juniors and sophomores have the opportunity to attend academic camps over the summer months:
    • 3D Object Modeling and Printing Camp - Students will study 3D object modeling and printing starting with the basics of a 3D printer. After learning the fundamentals, they will practice designing objects.
    • Adruino Camp - Students will use their creativity and the easy-to-learn Adruino to create projects with its sensors, motors, speakers and displays, to create projects that interact with them and their world.

  • eGFI – www.egfi-k12.org - Dream Up the Future” – explore a variety of different fields and learn how they impact the world. 
  • Engineer Girl – www.engineergirl.org – learn about different careers including job details, skills needed, educational needs, salary information, and potential projects you could work on. 
  • Engineering a World of Difference – www.engineeringaworldofdifference.org showcases real-life engineers, what impact they are making and information about what they actually do. 
  • Futures In Engineering – www.futuresinengineering.org – learn about different career fields, how to get there and see videos interviews of Engineers. 
  • Stem Works – www.stem-works.com – explore a variety of different careers, go through online exhibits, and learn more about possible job opportunities
