2024-2025 Humanities Magnet Program Gr. 6 Families Welcome Night: Recorded on 01.25.24

On January 25th, 2024, we held a VIRTUAL Family Night to provide answers to some of the top questions about our program. Below is a copy of our presentation and also a recording of our live session.

Hello Future Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School Panthers,

We are very excited that you have been offered the opportunity to join our Humanities and Communication program at our school and hope to see you all in the fall!  Moving forward there is very little you need to do in order to complete this process.  I have listed only three steps to join our program (i.e., accepting into our program); selecting a World Language; and completing a Google Form to join our MLK MS Magnet Program Directory.

As this is a magnet program you do not need to fill out a COSA form.  Your child’s assigned school will be changed to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School automatically.  Below is important information I would like to share with you at this point in the process.  If you ever have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out via phone or email to me or our Humanities Administrative Assistant, Carolina Caviedes (Carolina_D_Caviedes@mcpsmd.org).  In addition, all of my contact information is at the bottom of this email.

Incoming Humanities Magnet Program Gr. 6 Families Welcome Night:

On January 25, 2024 from 6:00 to 7:00 PM, we will hold a VIRTUAL Family Night to provide answers to some of the top questions about our program.  In addition, our students and families can see some highlights of the engaging interdisciplinary activities and lessons they will have the opportunity to be part of next fall.

Course Registration:

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School has 7 class periods per school day.  Six of these classes are required and predetermined.  This leaves a World Languages course to select using the link below.  If your child is passionate about the arts and music programs (i.e., Chorus, Orchestra, Band, Arts Rotation) and would like to continue, they would indicate this information and select an Electives course using the same link. The Electives course would replace a World Languages course (this is the only option). Please use the  link  below to select your child’s World Languages class.

Required Magnet Courses

Required Courses

Required World Language

·         Humanities English 6

·         Humanities Media 6

·         Humanities World Studies 6

·         Advanced Science

·         Mathematics (Math 6; AMP6+, AIM/AMP7+)

·         Physical Education/Health

The student would choose:

·         Spanish 1AB

·         French 1AB

A World Languages class is a requirement of MYP schools.

Please review the courses you will take and also COMPLETE THIS FORM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!: https://forms.gle/pVBvzggL5Drj3ANr5

 Classmate Contact Information

Many families have expressed an interest in receiving contact information for the students/families in the magnet program in order to facilitate carpools, group project work, and play dates.  As a result, I am working to put together a Humanities directory for the next school year.  This directory is shared with families who agree to share their contact information in late August.  You can agree to be part of the directory through this Google Form

Visiting the building

I know that you are anxious to come and see your future school.  We will provide 2 dates and times in the Summer where you can tour the building with all of our sixth grade students.  Information on summer tours will be mailed home.

Again, I am very excited your child has been afforded the opportunity to join the Humanities program at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School.  Your next steps are as follows:

We look forward to meeting you and working with your child over the next three years.  Best wishes during the last semester of elementary school!

Warmly,
Kristinae
