The Magruder Athletic Hall of Fame Committee is excited to announce their 2025 Induction Class
The Magruder Athletic Hall of Fame Committee is excited to announce their 2025 Induction Class. Nine athletes and one long time coach will be honored. Two ceremonies will take place the weekend of October 4th. All 10 inductees will be honored on Friday, October 3rd at halftime of the Varsity football game. A formal induction ceremony/dinner will be held on Saturday, October 4th (location and time are TBD). Here is a brief bio on each of the 10 being honored:
Michelle (Fowle) McFarland is a 2010 graduate who was named the 2009 Montgomery County Volleyball Player of the Year, also earned 1st team All-Met honors and was a AVCA All-American nominee. She set numerous school records at Magruder and had a career record of 88-6, which is also a school record. She was a four year letter winner in volleyball at Coastal Carolina.
Colleen Harwood is a 2011 graduate who was named the 2010 Montgomery County Field Hockey Player of the Year and earned 2nd team All-Met honors. She lettered in field hockey at Catholic University where she played on two conference championship teams and earned All-Conference honors multiple times. She was later named to the Landmark Conference All-Decade team.
John Kowalski is a 1978 graduate who placed 2nd in the 1978 Maryland state wrestling championships. He also captured the 1978 County and Regional Wrestling Champion. After graduation John lettered in wrestling at NC State for multiple seasons.
Calley Lawson is a 2012 graduate who qualified for the state golf championships all four years at Magruder and medaled in the 2011 championship. She won numerous youth golf tournaments including the 2010 and 2011 National Capital Optimist Junior Golf Tournament. She earned a scholarship to Tusculum College where she was a four time All-American Scholar-Athlete and team captain.
Tony Martin is a 1999 graduate who cheered for Magruder, West Virginia University and later the Baltimore Ravens. He was inducted into the West Virginia University Athletic Hall of Fame. He also performed for the Ravens Coed Cheer Team for nearly a decade, including at Super Bowl XlVII as a stunt team captain. He currently serves as a Cheer Coach for The Ravens.
Pele Paelay is a 2002 graduate who won state championships in both soccer and basketball. He was the All-Met Player of the Year in Soccer (2001) and earned All-Met honors in basketball (2001-2002). He played Division 1 basketball at Coastal Carolina where he was the Big South Player of the Year and earned Honorable Mention All-American honors. He later played professional basketball in Europe.
Will Talesnick is a 2002 graduate of Magruder who starred in soccer, basketball and tennis. He was a member of both 2001-2002 state championships in basketball and soccer, earning awards and honors for both sports. He went on to play both soccer and basketball at McDaniel where he led both teams in scoring his senior season.
Jordan Tolbert is a 2011 graduate who finished 2nd twice in the Maryland State Wrestling Championships. He won 2 County and Regional Championships. He currently holds the school record for most career wins (141) and career pins (86). His senior year he won the Monisera award, which goes to the senior that scored the most career points at the County Championship. After graduation he wrestled at Campbell University.
Karin Vadelund is a 1986 graduate who starred in tennis, field hockey, basketball and softball. She posted a 22-1 record in tennis singles, was the leading scorer on the 1984 state championship field hockey team and earned All-Met honors in basketball. She later played basketball at George Washington University and is a 2003 inductee of their Athletic HOF.
Scott Zanni coached girls and boys volleyball and is the current Athletic Director. His 2019 Girls Volleyball team won the state championship with a 25-0 record and he earned All-Met Coach of the Year. During his 27 year career at Magruder his girls teams had a record of 465 wins and 105 losses. He earned numerous county, state and regional coaching awards and was a finalist for the 2007 NFHS National Coach of the Year.
