6th Grade Museum Field Trip

Dear 6th Grade Parents/Guardians,

We are pleased to inform you of an upcoming field trip for our 6th grade students on Thursday, February 26, 2026.  In collaboration with our NAACP Parents’ Council and PTSA, our 6th grade students will have the opportunity to visit one of two museums: the National Museum of African American History and Culture or the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Both museums offer powerful learning experiences that explore important moments in history, identity, and human rights.   While some of the topics may be emotionally impactful this experience is designed to support student learning and reflection.  It is also aligned with MCPS curriculum, equity practices, and the mission of educating the whole child by promoting historical understanding, empathy, and civic responsibility.  Parents/guardians will be asked to choose which museum their child would prefer to attend.  Please know that parents/guardians are able  to opt-out of these field trips due to the nature of the content.

*United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (100 Raoul Wallenberg Pl. SW, Washington, DC 20024)
10:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.  Buses will depart Kingsview at 8:45 a.m. and will return at 3:30 p.m.
*National Museum of African American History & Culture (1400 Constitution Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20560)
10:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Buses will depart Kingsview at 8:45 a.m. and will return at 3:30 p.m.

Activity buses depart Kingsview at 4:30 p.m. and are available for students who normally take the school bus home.  The students must know which activity bus route to take and the corresponding bus stop before the day of the trip.

Thanks to the sponsorship of the  NAACP Parents’ Council, Kingsview MS was awarded a grant to cover the costs for transportation and any admission costs.  We are happy to announce that there is NO COST to attend this field trip.  To build community and to support student safety and ensure clear identification of Kingsview students during the field trip, we highly encourage students to wear the Kingsview Cultural Hoodie, which was specially designed for this field trip and serves as a commemorative piece celebrating this unique experience. The cost of the Kingsview Cultural Hoodie is $20 and can be purchased through our PTSA by Friday, February 6, 2026.  Please see attached flyer for more information.  If you have any questions regarding the purchase of the hoodie, please contact naacppc@kmsptsa.org.

The parent permission form should be returned to your child’s Period 1 teacher by Friday, February 6, 2026.  Students will be eating their lunch while on the field trip and must bring a bagged lunch.  Parents have the option of ordering a bag lunch from the school cafeteria.   A cost of $2.80 will be charged to the student’s cafeteria account.  If you wish to order a bag lunch from the Kingsview cafeteria, please complete the attached Lunch Order Slip and return it along with the signed permission slip by Friday, February 6.  If your student requires medication outside of normal school hours, please contact the Kingsview health room at 240-740-7132 by Friday, February 6, 2026.  We will be working with our health room staff to ensure all students requiring medication during normal school hours have access to their medications while on the field trip.  All students are expected to represent Kingsview Middle School with appropriate behavior. Students must follow all sponsor directions and understand that all MCPS rules apply.  Please be advised, that in the event of an emergency, staff will take attendance and move to a secure location at the museums.  The emergency phone tree will be activated by an administrator.

We need parent chaperones to make these field trips possible!  If you are interested in chaperoning the trip, please check the box on the permission form.  All parent chaperones must complete the online Child Abuse and Neglect training that can be accesses via their personal ParentVue account. This training is valid for three school years.  More information on this training can be found at http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/childabuseandneglect/  Please complete the online training by Friday, February 13, 2026.  If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact Ms. Michelle Sobers, student support coordinator, at Michelle_Sobers@mcpsmd.org or at 240-740-7130.

Respectfully,

Dyan L. Harrison

Principal

Due to the inclement weather and cleaning efforts, schools were closed this week and we were unable to send the field trip packets out with students.  These packets will be sent home with students as soon as schools re-open.  In the meantime, we kindly ask parent to please take a moment to review this information with your student. We need to have an estimate of how many students are interested in attending each museum so we can confirm how many busses we need for each museum (for students, staff, and parent chaperones) and we also need to know which hoodie sizes need to be ordered. We kindly ask you to complete the surveys as soon as possible so that we can start working on these important field trip tasks.
