Third Grade Spelling

It is important for your child to spell words correctly in everyday writing.  Please encourage your child to check his/her spelling in their journals.  If your child asks you how to spell a word that you think he/she should be spelling correctly, please let your child's teacher know what the word is, so it can be included in the biweekly spelling lists.  There are some activities at www.edhelper.com that you can use with your child to practice his/her words.

Ways to Study Spelling Words

  1. Rainbow Words: Write spelling words in crayon.  Write them first in one color, go back over them in another color, and then do this a third time.
  2. Words Without Vowels: Write a spelling word, but place a line where each vowel should go.  Example: "spell" would be   sp_ll
  3. Words Without Consonants: Same as without vowels, except leave out the consonants.  Example:  "hang" would be _a_ _
  4. Pyramid Shape Words: Write words letter by letter in a pyramid shape.
  5. Disappearing Words:  happy, happ_, hap_ _, ha_ _ _, h_ _ _ _, _ _ _ _ _
  6. Reappearing Words: Same as above, only backwards.
  7. ABC Order: Write words in alphabetical order.  Watch 2nd and 3rd letters!
  8. Colored Vowels and Consonants: Write words two times.  Once with vowels being one color and consonants being another color, and the 2nd time use a third color to write the word in one color.
  9. Picture Words: Draw a picture and write all your spelling words somewhere in the picture.  Make a frame of your picture by writing the spelling words around the outside of the picture.  See if someone can find all of the spelling words.
