Message from Mrs. Morris, Principal
Welcome to our new Somerset Elementary School webpage! I’m Mrs. Kelly Morris and I have the honor and privilege of being the principal of Somerset Elementary School. I grew up in a small town called Olyphant, Pennsylvania, which is right outside the city of Scranton. I received a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Penn State University and a Master’s degree in Administration and Supervision from Bowie State University. In my free time I enjoy reading, cooking, exercising and spending time with my family and friends.
I began my career in education in Jacksonville, Florida where I taught a fourth grade gifted and talented class. I then moved to Maryland and taught kindergarten, first, fifth and sixth grades in the Prince George’s County Public School System. I came to Montgomery County Public Schools in 2007 as the staff development teacher at Bethesda Elementary, where I later became the assistant principal. In 2009 I moved to Brookhaven Elementary as a principal intern.
I have been at Somerset since July 1, 2010 and I take great pride in the opportunity to be part of this special school community. Somerset is a wonderful and successful school characterized by high expectations for both staff and students, attention to service learning and a strong sense of community.
Message from Dr. Woodward, Assistant Principal
My name is Barbara Woodward and I am the assistant principal at Somerset Elementary. I started in this position on February 1, 2011. I began my career in Montgomery County Public Schools at Westland Middle School in 1992 where I taught social studies. It is a wonderful privilege to be back in your community.
I am a native of Wisconsin and received my undergraduate and master’s degrees in Minnesota. Over the course of my career in MCPS, I have worked as a secondary social studies teacher, staff development teacher, middle and high school administrator and central office instructional specialist. While I am at work my favorite activity is visiting the classrooms and seeing the incredible teaching and learning. This is an engaging and thoughtful learning environment, and I am happy to be here.
