Good evening, Northwest Families, this is Jimmy D’Andrea, principal of Northwest High School, with your Sunday evening message.  Since this upcoming Saturday is Veterans’ Day, I want to begin by thanking all of the military veterans in our community.  We truly appreciate your service to our country.


Schedule for This Week

Please remember that this Thursday, November 9, is the end of the first marking period and an early release day.  The last class on Thursday ends at 11:38 am, and then there is a brief student lunch period from 11:38 am to 12:00 noon.  We have regular, full days of school on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday this week.  Please also remember to set your clocks back one hour if you did not do it last night, as daylight savings time ended this weekend. 


Congratulations to Marching Band!

Congratulations to our marching band for placing 3rd in the nation yesterday at the US Bands National Championship in Pennsylvania.  We are very proud of this tremendous accomplishment!  Special thanks to Emily Carpenter, director; Dave Eason, assistant director; and all of the parents who have supported the band throughout the competition season!


Congratulations to Drama Program!

Congratulations to all of the students who participated in our fall play “Oz” on Friday and Saturday.  It was truly outstanding!  Special thanks to Sherion Cosby, director; Lilly Greenlee, technical director; Aida Bendt, chair of the parent committee; and all of the individuals who volunteered their time to ensure the success of the show!


Holiday Giving Project of Montgomery County: Requests Due by Monday, November 13

The Holiday Giving Project of Montgomery County provides December holiday assistance to families in need throughout our community. To request assistance, there is a form that must be completed and returned to the Northwest Counseling Office by Monday, November 13.  The form is available in the counseling office and at this link: 


Northwest Blankets Being Sold by the Music Department

The Northwest Music Department is selling “NWHS Jags” embroidered fleece blankets to raise funds for their spring field trip. Blankets are only $15, and order forms are available here:  Orders can be submitted to Ms. Baker, choral music director, or the media center staff.  The deadline to order is this Thursday, November 9.


Montgomery County Flu Shot Clinic at Northwest HS: Thursday, November 9

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services is sponsoring a free flu shot clinic for children between the ages of 3 and 18 on Thursday, November 9, from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm in the Northwest cafeteria.  To make an appointment, please visit, or call 311.


MCPS Mental Health Fair: Monday, November 13

As part of School Psychology Awareness Week (November 13‒17), the Montgomery County School Psychologists’ Association is presenting the first School Psychologist Mental Health Fair on Monday, November 13. Students and families are invited to participate as school psychologists from MCPS share skills and information on a variety of topics, including yoga and mindfulness, early childhood development, sleep hygiene, pet therapy, and coping skills. The event will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 13, in the Carver Educational Services Center Auditorium at 850 Hungerford Drive in Rockville.


Learner’s Permit Test at Northwest HS: Wednesday, November 15

Northwest High School is very excited to be partnering with the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) to offer the learner’s permit test at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, November 15, in the Northwest High School Auditorium.  Interested students must be at least 15 years and 9 months by November 15.  Permission forms may be picked up in the main office and must be returned to the main office no later than Tuesday, November 14. 

If students pass the test, they will have to travel to an MVA office at a future date to obtain an actual learner’s permit.  However, we are offering this service at Northwest to make it more convenient for students to take the test in a familiar environment.  If you have questions about this, please contact Ms. Barbara Veirs in the Northwest High School Main Office at (301) 601-4660, or Ms. Monica Neupane at the MVA at (301) 956-1400.


Winter Sports Registration

Winter sports tryouts start Wednesday, November 15, and registration this year will be online.  For complete details, please visit   Parents must register their children by Monday, November 13, in order for them to be able to try out on Wednesday, November 15.  If you have any questions about registering for winter sports tryouts, please contact Ms. Anne Rossiter, athletic director, at  Please note that some teams may require additional sport-specific forms, and these forms will not be available online.  Students should check with the respective coach to see if there are any additional required forms.


Senior Baby Ads: Due Wednesday, November 22

Senior baby ads are $25 and include a baby picture and a quote.   Order forms are available from Ms. Mason in room 122, and all ads are due to Ms. Mason no later than Wednesday, November 22.


Order Your Yearbook!

Yearbooks can be purchased online at, or from Ms. Mason in room 122.  The books are currently $75. 


Cap and Gown Fee

The graduation cap and gown price for this year is $52 until April 1.  The fee can be paid online at
