Creative Kids

Creative Kids is a literature-based after-school drama program conducted in over 50 schools, children's centers, and organizations throughout the DC metro area.

At each Creative Kids session, an artist-instructor reads a specially selected multicultural children's book. After hearing the story, the students dramatize the plot and improvise their own stories based on the book. Creative Kids works to introduce children to theater and drama tools, encourage reading and language, develop critical thinking skills, team building and self-esteem.

Examples of chosen books might include:

  • The Enormous Turnip by Alexei Tolstoy

  • Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina

  • Anansi and the Moss Covered Rock, a story from Ghana, told by Eric Kimmel

  • Liang and the Magic Paint Brush, by Demi

  • The Legend of the Bluebonnet, a Native American legend, by Tomie DePaola

  • Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters, an African tale, by John Steptoe
