Second Grade News and Updates:

Quarter 3:

Reading: We are focusing on reading instruction on main idea, story structure, point of view, context clues, character development, sequencing and cause/effect. We encourage to continue to read independently at home each night as well as use clues within the story to identify and understand unknown words.

Math: We have just completed our second unit! In our current unit, we are learning about non-standard and standard measurement (centimeters, decimeters, meters, inches and feet), telling time to the nearest five minutes and reviewing addition and subtraction strategies. Please practice telling time to the nearest five minutes at home with your child. To challenge them, work on telling time to the nearest minute or figuring out elapsed time.

Some great websites to help students at home with these concepts include:

PYP/Writing: Our new unit called "All Good Writers" focuses on the writing process, the six traits of writing and story elements. During this unit student will learn about different genres of writing as well as author styles in order to write and illustrate their own picture book. We encourage your child to explore and read different book genres from the school and public library in order to help them with choosing one for their final project. Creative writing at home is also suggested.

Thank you,
