School Health Services Information

Welcome to our health room! Our health room is staffed daily by a school health room technician, in addition to a school community health nurse on a regular basis. We provide first aid during school on an as-needed basis as well as maintain health records which include the immunization records, physicals and screenings for each student.
This year we are staffed by Mrs. April Medellin, BSN, RN, the School Community Health Nurse, and our School Health Room Technician position is currently vacant.

Contact the health room at 240-740-0152 or via email at April_D_Medellin@mcpsmd.org.

Vaccinations
The Annotated Code of Maryland (10.06.04.03) requires all Maryland students new to Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) and those entering a preschool program or Kindergarten through Grade 12 to provide documentation of required, age-appropriate vaccinations or a medical or religious exemption. This documentation is required within 20 calendar days from the date of admission. Principals will receive a list of students who have not provided documentation by the deadline from School Health Services (SHS) staff. Students on this list must be excluded from school until such documentation is provided.
All vaccinations given in Maryland are required to be entered into the state database, Immunet. The military does not participate. If the health room reaches out to you it is because the vaccines are not entered into the database. Please send in documentation and have your provider enter the information into the database. It is helpful for use by future providers and emergency rooms.

Physical Examinations and Required Health Forms
Medications in School
Medication forms are required for any medications to be given in school. This applies for both prescription and over-the-counter medications. Medication forms are available from the health room or at the following links:
IMPORTANT: Medication forms MUST be signed by both the parent and the health care provider. All medications must be brought by an adult, in its original container and with accompanying completed form.

Staying Home From School
WHEN TO KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME FROM SCHOOL

Some important signs of illness are:
1. Temperature of more than 100o
F orally
2. Nausea or vomiting
3. Stomachache
4. Diarrhea
5. Pale or flushed face

12. Red or pink eyes
13. Loss of energy or decrease in

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY CHILD HAS ANY OF THESE SIGNS?
If your child has these symptoms when it is time for school, it is best they stay home. Most childhood illnesses are over soon and no cause for worry. If the symptoms are severe or persist for more than 24 hours, contact your private health care provider.
Children sometimes use illness as an excuse to miss school. Some children force themselves to go to school when they are sick. There may be times that your child does not show signs of the above-noted symptoms and is still sick. Please be alert to your children's health and decide when it is best to send them to school.
WHEN MAY MY CHILD RETURN TO SCHOOL AFTER AN ILLNESS?
The Centers for Disease Control recommends that individuals stay home “until at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit or 37.8 degrees Celsius) or signs of a fever (chills, feeling very warm, flushed appearance, or sweating) without the use of fever-reducing medicine.” http://www.cdc.gov/flu/school/guidance.htm Your child may return to school when there is no longer a sign of illness. There may be times when it is necessary for your child to see their private health care provider before returning to school.
Contact your school nurse if you have questions.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF MY CHILD BECOMES ILL AT SCHOOL?
If your child complains of being sick or does not look well after they reach school, we will contact you. It is important that you provide the school with up-to-date contact information including phone numbers.

http://espanol.cdc.gov/enes/flu/school/guidance.htm
