Welcome to the Briggs Chaney Math Department! As a SilverSpring native, I am delighted to teach in the same school system that educated me. I graduated with a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and received my Masters degree from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two daughters.
Mr. Peter Bikakis, Algebra and Algebra STEM - email
Hello Briggs Chaney Middle School. My name is Peter Bikakis. I have lived in Maryland for my entire life and even went to school at the University of Maryland where I studied Kinesiology. I am bilingual in both English and Greek. My parents are from Greece and I have spent a lot of time there with family. This is where my love for soccer began as I spent my summers playing with my friends in the neighborhood every day. I was named after my grandfather who taught me how to fish and the importance of hard work. I’m so grateful to be able to share my love for math and soccer with the Briggs Chaney community. I also have a little white dog and her name is Snoopy. Stop by to see the latest pictures of her adventures.

Teaching is a rewarding experience. I teach so I can learn about the world and all of those infinite possibilities that brand new minds bring to me each and every day. I graduated from Delaware State University receiving a BA in Special Ed. (K-12) and Elementary Education (Levels 1-6). Years later, I earned a MA in the area of Curriculum Design and Instruction, from National Louis University. I have over 20 years of teaching experience having taught at Briggs Chaney for the past 10 years. When I am not in school, I enjoy spending time with my family, coaching basketball and playing golf.
Ms. Melanie Carbine - email
Hello Briggs Chaney Middle School! I am Melanie Carbine and this is my fifth year teaching Math at BCMS. I have a background in Art history and English literature as well as Math education. I have lived everywhere from Seattle, WA, San Francisco, CA and Salt Lake City, UT to Ann Arbor, MI and now the DC Metropolitan area. While I only know a few words in Chinese and my Spanish is only conversational, I do speak Marshallese, which is very useful in the Marshall Islands where I lived for three years. Before teaching, I was very involved in writing and creating art including performance art, photography, and glass fusion. When I’m not teaching, I’m most likely wrapped up in some art project, hiking or traveling.

I decided to be a teacher on a warm summer day in Shenandoah National park. I had hiked 900 miles and I had another 1200 miles to go in a journey from Georgia to Maine. After reaching my destination, I applied to graduate school at UMBC. I wanted to make an impact on my world and I was more likely to do so as a teacher than as a stockbroker. Two years later, I started a profession that has challenged and fulfilled me for the past twenty three years. I have taught at Harmony Hills ES, at Tilden MS and for the last 13 years at Briggs Chaney MS.
I met my wife while training to be a teacher. Together, we moved to Montgomery County – just a short distance from Briggs Chaney. I have one son, who attends MCPS. I enjoy bumping into students at the Giant or Target. So if you see me strolling down aisle 3 stop and say hello.
Mr. Charles "Matt" Jackson - email
Hello BCMS Bears! I am Mr. Matt Jackson. I was born and raised in southwestern Pennsylvania. My interest in math developed at an early age when I became obsessed with the statistics on the back of baseball and football cards. I attended West Virginia University and graduated in 1996 with a degree in Secondary Education. In the fall of 1998, I was hired to teach 8th grade math at Briggs Chaney, and I’ve been here ever since. I live in Columbia, MD with my wife Ana (a former Briggs Chaney English teacher) and my daughter Daniela.

Hello BCMS family! Welcome to the new school year! I am one of the Math IM 7 teachers! Although this is my first year in Montgomery County and at Briggs Chaney, I am super excited to be a part of the family! I am originally from New York where I completed my undergraduate in a dual major of Elementary School/Special Education with a minor in American Sign Language and Mathematics. I have loved math so much that my freshman year of college when I found out that I would only have one math class, I knew I had to add a minor of math (and even got my Master's degree in Mathematics Education)! After some experience in New York, I moved to Maryland a few years ago to begin teaching in Prince George's County and now I am here! I have fallen in love with the state of Maryland and cannot wait to continue my teaching career here at Briggs Chaney Middle School. In my spare time, I am a tutor at both a tutoring center and privately. I love to explore the DMV (since it is all still fairly new to me) and travel (either home to see family or somewhere new), soak up the sun, and most importantly spend time with family and friends! I look forward to a great school year! I love teaching and have always wanted to pursue teaching because of the rewards that come with teaching, such as seeing the "ah ha" moment on my students' faces when they finally grasp a concept!

I started my teaching as a student teacher in the Pittsburgh Public School system while I attended the University of Pittsburgh. After a year of teaching 6th grade in the Cleveland City Schools, I came to MCPS. I spent 3 years at Westover ES, teaching 6th grade, a 5/6 combination, and 5th grade. The rest of my career has been at BCMS, where I helped open the building in 1991. I have taught a variety of math courses over the years at BCMS, ranging from 6th grade, to Algebra, to many variations of summer school. In addition to that I also coached the math team for many, many years. I did my master’s work at the University of Maryland. I am married to Kerstin and have two children, my son Jarek, and my daughter Alina.
Ms. Jeanette Stavely - email
Hello BCMS family! I am Mrs. Jeanette Stavely. I was born and raised in Prince Georges County, Maryland, where I still live. I live with my husband Steve and we currently have a son on the way. I graduated from Towson University with a Bachelor's of Science in Mathematics. I have always loved mathematics and I greatly enjoy problem solving and learning new things. In my spare time, I skate on an adult synchronized ice skating team, which competes both in and out of state. I have been figure skating since I was 4 years old and never plan to stop.
