Second Grade

Math

Module 5- Addition and Subtraction Within 1,000 with Word Problems to 100

In Module 5, students build upon their mastery of renaming place value units and extend their work with conceptual understanding of the addition and subtraction algorithms to numbers within 1,000, always with the option of modeling with materials or drawings.  Throughout the module, students continue to focus on strengthening and deepening conceptual understanding and fluency. Throughout Module 5, students maintain addition and subtraction fluency within 100 as they use these skills during their daily application work to solve one- and two-step word problems of all types.

Module 6- Foundations of Multiplication and Division

Students learn to organize a set of objects into equal groups and then into rows and columns, or rectangular arrays.  They use math drawings to analyze the relationship between rows and columns and to model the array as the sum of equal addends. As students compose and decompose arrays, they recognize that the array structure is a collection of rows or columns and that either can be seen as a unit.  Students match repeated addition to both the structure of the rows and columns. Students also explore the meaning of even and odd numbers

Reading/Writing

Unit 5: In this unit, students will read and compare selections about technology, and analyze the role technology plays in society. Students will work on reading strategies such as summarizing a text, identifying the main idea/author’s purpose, and making inferences. To build vocabulary, students will determine the meaning of compound words, and determine the meaning of multiple meaning words. Students will write an opinion piece that uses facts and details to support their opinion.

Unit 6- In this unit, students will read and compare selections from around the world to analyze how literature can provide insight into different cultures. Students will work on reading strategies such as recounting story events, Acknowledge Differences in the Points of View of Characters and Determining the Central Message.

Social Studies/Science

Social Studies: Students will identify the natural, capital, and human resources used in the production of a good or service and identify examples of specialized workers in the school and community. In Module 2, students will explain why people have to make economic choices about goods and services and describe how consumers acquire goods and services.

Science: Students will make observations of plants and animals to compare diversity of life in different habitats.
