Greetings Lakewood community,
this is Principal Berner with information for the school week of Monday, April 15, 2019, through Tuesday, April 16th:
Spring break! Whoopee! It is almost here. This Wednesday, April 17th, all
MCPS schools will shut down for a well-deserved spring break! Schools will
re-open on Tuesday,
April 23, 2019. I hope that all of you have a fun and
restful time and enjoy the holiday season with family and friends! Don’t forget
to keep reading!!
Happy 50th Birthday Lakewood ES! A huge thank you to
all of the families, staff, and students who came out to the dance and
silent auction Friday night! It sure drew a crowd and everyone had a blast! Our
new eagle mascot, to be named in the near future, and donated by our fabulous
PTA, was revealed and will be greeting our students every morning! I would
be remiss if I didn’t thank all the student, staff and parent
volunteers; our building services crew of Ms. Leo and Mr. Brooks;
vendors, parents and staff who donated items; and, most importantly, Mrs.
Eisenfeld, Mrs. Brinch, and Mrs. Toledo for the extraordinary work they put
into this event the past several months, the day of, and that evening!
Thank you everyone for your dedication to our school community!
**Additional Dates for you to put on your calendars:
**Testing Prep: Throughout
this past month or so, Lakewood staff members have been discussing and learning
more about the upcoming MCAP assessment for students in grades 3-5. We have
also been preparing our students through various daily assignments in
understanding the various vocabulary and writing tasks used throughout the
assessments. The first day of our testing begins when we return, Tuesday, April 23, 2019. All
testing dates and times for each grade level are listed on the Lakewood website
for your convenience. I am asking that if possible, that you please schedule
any doctor, dental, or other appointments around the testing schedule; this
will allow your child to participate fully in the assessments and help prevent
a lot of make-up sessions. I am also requesting that you begin
working with your children, primarily those in grades 3-5, on the following:
to bed early and getting a good night’s rest.
Eating a good breakfast with protein for thinking power and
carbohydrates for energy.
Leaving the house with your full support.
Shooting for perfect attendance.
Language Immersion Programs: Applications for elementary school language
immersion programs in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) are now
available. The application deadline for the 2019-2020 school year is Friday, April 26, 2019.

for the Week:
what happens, keep on beginning and failing. Each time you fail, start all over
again, and you will grow stronger until you find that you have accomplished a
purpose—not the one you began with perhaps, but one you will be glad to
remember”… Anne Sullivan
