General Information and Policies

School Hours

School Hours
Our school hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 3:25 p.m.  Students can arrive between 8:40 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.  Adult supervision provided by Lakewood’s staff does not start until 8:40 a.m.  Please do not send or drop off your child to school earlier than 8:40 a.m.  Students will need to be unpacked and ready to start school by 9:00    a.m.  Students who arrive after 9:00 a.m. will be considered tardy and will need to be signed in by a parent in the main office.

***Important:  Please encourage your child to remember homework, personal belongings, etc. at the end of each day.  Due to safety and security concerns, students WILL NOT be permitted access into their classrooms after 3:45 p.m.
Also, do not allow your child to bring personal toys to school.  They cause stress when lost or missing or a distraction if used during instructional time.

Students will be dismissed at 3:25 p.m.  We will be starting with the walkers, followed by the carpoolers and bus riders.

Attendance

The following description of full- and half-day attendance is taken from the Maryland Student Records System Manual:

“A student is counted present for a full day if a student is in attendance four hours or more of the school day.  A student is counted present for ½ day if in attendance for at least two hours of the school day, but less than four hours.”

  • Students will be recorded as a.m. absent, if they arrive at school more than two hours late.
  • Students will be recorded as p.m. absent, if they leave school more than two hours early.
  • Students will be recorded as either a.m. absent or p.m. absent, if they are absent from school for more than two hours, but less than four hours during the school day.
  • Students will be recorded as full-day absent, if they are present for less than two hours of the second day.
  • Students will be recorded as full-day present, if they are present for more than four hours of the school day.

Traffic Patterns – Bus Lane, “Kiss & Go”, and Arrival Procedures
Parents driving their child(ren) to school should enter our school through our Lindley Terrace entrance only.  Parking is limited and under NO circumstances are vehicles allowed to park along the curb of the driveway.  The fire marshal has notified us that since this seems to be a recurring situation, they will be looking for violators to this condition.  Also, you will see a “Kiss and Go” sign where children can be dropped off.  At this point be prepared to discharge your child and move on so as to not back up traffic on Wootton Parkway.  Please do not leave your vehicle parked on the curb or the handicap spots to walk your child into the building.  Only exit your child on the curb side (not the driver side).  The bus lane at the Glen Mill Road entrance is for buses only during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Please be respectful of this restriction.  Please notify the office of any violators with vehicle identification (such as make, model, color, license plate number).  Thank you for your cooperation to make arrivals and departures safe and efficient!

Early Dismissal

Parents wishing to take their child from school before the 3:25 p.m. dismissal time must come into the office and sign their child out.  Students will only be called down after the parent has arrived.  Please do not call the office from your car and ask us to call students in advance.  No students will be dismissed between 2:45 – 3:25 P.M.

Office Procedures

  • Parents wishing to volunteer, or visit in a classroom must arrange time with the teacher in advance.  Please sign in at the office and take a “Visitors/Volunteer” sticker before going to classrooms.
  • Non-custodial parents wishing to receive copies of all Wednesday flyers must send a written note to the office with your name and address, your child’s name, and your child’s teacher.

Bus Riding

Our bus drivers have asked that if your child is riding home on the bus with a friend, please bring a note from home for the driver.  Some children forget to bring a note and some give it to their teachers, but the bus drivers have told us that without a note, they will not allow friends to ride.  Please remember to send a note and to mention to your child that it should be shown to the teacher but given to the driver.  Thanks!

Communication Protocol for Parental Issues and Concerns

Communication lines between parents and the school community are keys to an effective educational program.  Our school’s procedures for handling concerns by a parent/guardian relative to the educational or supplemental program of our students will be as follows:

Level I              The parent/guardian will contact the classroom teacher/sponsor to schedule a
conference for discussion and resolution of the concern.

Level II             If the classroom teacher/sponsor and the parent/guardian are unable to resolve the concern, the assistant principal or principal shall meet with the parent/guardian and classroom teacher/sponsor in an effort to resolve the concern.

Level III            The principal will schedule a conference with the superintendent if a solution is
not achieved.

Dogs on Campus

Many people have been bringing their dogs to drop off their children and/or to pick them up at the end of the day.  While I appreciate that all dogs who are brought here are very friendly and that many children adore coming to pet them, we do have a number of children who have expressed fear in exiting the building as they are afraid of the dogs.  To ensure a comfortable environment for the children, I am asking that parents please leave their dogs at home.  If you feel that you must bring your dog,  please wait for your child with your dog on the grounds away from where children will have to pass you.  Also, we have had people walking their dogs here and not cleaning up after them.  Thanks for keeping our campus clean and safe!

Portable Communication Devices

Just a reminder, MCPS does not allow elementary school students to possess portable communication devices (pagers, cell phones, etc.) on school grounds without prior, written approval from the principal.  If your family has a special circumstance requiring your child to carry a portable communication device, please contact the principal.

Child Pick-Up/Drop Off Rules

A new bus lane has been constructed at the Glen Mill Road entrance. This is for busses only during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Parents who drive their children to school will still use the Lindley Terrace entrance. As you enter Lindley Terrace you will see a "Kiss and Go" sign where you should drop off your child(ren). Please make sure you move quickly out of the carpool circle so as to avoid a traffic jam on Wootton Parkway. Please do not park on the curb to walk your child into the building.

Maryland law requires no motorist pass a bus where students are loading or unloading.
