Congratulations to Mrs Heather Mahon!!
Mrs Mahon organized our Community Walk for the Homeless and Clemente students raised $1530 !! Mrs Mahon is one of our 7th grade team leaders and is always looking for ways that our students can help the community. She set a goal of $1000 and our students raised much more than that. Thanks, Mrs Mahon for not only helping our students learn in school but also for giving them the opportunity to help others.

Super Job Scottie Mejia!
6th grader Scottie Mejia has been selected for the MoCo Little League All Star baseball team. His team chose Scottie to play for the MCLL West All Star game (Montgomery County Little League) then was selected for the MoCo team that fields the best team in the county to play against other counties! He has been playing baseball since age 5 and plays several positions including Pitcher, Catcher and his favorite, 2nd Base. He is excited to try out for our school team next year to play for his home school against other local schools. Scottie loves baseball and is thrilled to hopefully play for a school named for fellow player Roberto Clemente. Scotties knows what a great player Roberto Clemente was but what a great man as well.

Congratulations to Mr Greg Young for earning National Board Certification in Science!!
National Board Certification is a voluntary assessment program designed to develop, retain and recognize accomplished teachers, and to embed ongoing improvement in schools nationwide. While state teacher credentialing programs set the basic requirements to teach in each state, National Board Certified Teachers must demonstrate advanced teaching knowledge, skills and practices. Completion of National Board Certification signifies that teachers have developed and demonstrated the skills required of an accomplished education professional.

1% of teachers nationwide have earned National Board Certification and our Mr Greg Young is now one of them.

Mr Young has been teaching for 18 years, the last 12 have been here at RCMS. Mr Young says that science brings joy to his life every day and that he is happiest being part of a classroom full of young minds exploring the natural world around them. He thanks last year’s 7th graders for being a part of his videos that show the National Board what teaching science is all about!

Another round of congratulations to Clemente’s Math team which continues to sweep every math tournament that they enter!
The Math team is sweeping math tournaments all over the State! Earlier this year, the Clemente math team attended the meet at Ft Meade and took home top honors. Several of our teams scored above perfect by answering every question correctly plus the bonus! Recently, Clemente hosted its first regional math meet and had another banner day. Of the 5 schools that participated and 9 teams, Clemente won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place! The 1st place team received a perfect score. Way to go Math Team!!

STEM Conference invitation and meeting Dr Ben Carson

Ms Carraway and Ms Okusaga took several students to the AACE International STEM conference held at the Wardman Park Marriott in Washington DC this past July. Engineering and Science workshops were held as well as STEM industry exhibits. Students spoke with an Energy & Environment company engineer and shared that their science units include energy conservation and environmental science. They easily made a real world connection between their studies and the work that the company performs!

The highlight of the conference was the keynote speaker Dr Ben Carson. Dr Carson is world renown for his work in pediatric neurosurgery. He credits his success to spending time reading as many books as he could get his hands on and the encouragement of his teachers. Dr Carson is now a best-selling author himself. After listening to the opening speech, the students were delighted when Dr Carson came into their workshop and chatted with them personally. He presented the students and teachers with a signed copy of his book. The entire day was a tremendous privilege and Clemente was proudly represented by Ms Carraway and Ms Okusaga and their students: Naike Ngassam Njike, Amiah Ballou, Tyshawn Johnson, Jaylin Scott and Marcus Johnson.

Boy Scout Patrick Mitchell

6th grader Patrick Mitchell recently earned his rank of 2nd Class in Boy Scouts. He is active in Troop 489 which was established November 1, 1953. Patrick started in Cub Scouts and keeps advancing through the program. He enjoyed summer camp and is working on merit badges. He is learning leadership skills and hopes to be an Eagle Scout one day – only 5% of boys in scouting reach this milestone.

Thank you for being Committed to Clemente and your community! We are proud of all of you!

October 13, 2013

Besides being an expert in numbers, our very own 6th grade math teacher Ms Liz Gall is also triumphant on the softball field!
She pitches for the Lyons Spirit Softball team who won 3rd place in the Women’s Major Softball National Championships in Stratford, Connecticut!!
The Lyons Spirit is a Class A Fastpitch team and knocks it out of the park!

Nicholas Martinell was busy this summer making a difference for the children in Haiti! Nick, a 7th grader at Clemente Middle School, made care packages for orphans in Haiti. In addition to packing personal care items, Nick also cut and sewed stuffed bears for the children. He included his younger brother Joey in this project making it a family affair! Nick worked on the project with other volunteers through the Big Drywood VBS program. Project volunteers made care packages for 100 orphans in 2 orphanages.
