The Boxer, Kathleen Karr
This book is about a teenager named John Woods. It tells about he boxes for money to support his poor family. He is arrested and put in jail for 6 months. In jail he meets someone who teaches him how to box. When he gets out he goes to a place to box called Broorie's Saloon. While he is there he is indeafed. Then he goes to Canada for a pro fight; he wins. I would not recommend this book because it is not very detailed. ~ R.J.H., 8/31/02
Ghost of Fossil Glen, Cynthia Defelice
There was a girl who was about to fall off of a cliff but then a voice (not her voice) shows her how to get off of the cliff. Then she got a diary in the mail and letters would just appear, letting the voice (or ghost) talk to her. Then the ghost told her about this girl that was murdered by a man that wanted to marry her mother for the moeny. but the girl didn't like him, so he murdered her making everybody think that she fell off of a cliff. Then the ghost leads her to the dead body, and then everybody found out the truth. I'd recommend this book because it is surprising, mysterious, and the book makes you think like a detective. ~Sashi A.
Running Out of Time, Hiddix
This book is about a girl who all her life thought she was living in the 1800's. One day her mother told her that a deadly disease had struck there town. Then her mother told her that it was really 1996 and their village was being videotaped and was a tourist site where people came to see the 1800's, and with modern medicine the disease could be cured. So she goes into town to try and find the medicine, and the man that was supposed to help her ends up wanting to kill her, and many other things. I would recommend this book because it is suspenseful and surprising. ~ Sashi A.
A Day Late A Dollar Short, Terry McLinn
I would recommend this book because it is about life and how it is so hard to be a single parent and depend your on self. She talked about how her babies grows up to adults and teens. I think it is a great book for adults not children so if a adult wanted to read a great book this will be the one. ~Tashma, 9/3/02
A Princess in the Spotlight, Meg Cabot
This book is about a girl who just found out that she's a princess. Her mother is dating an Algebra teacher, they are going to have a baby, and they are getting married. Did I mention she (Mia) was in high school. I would recommend this book because it's exciting, and you wouldn't want to put it down. ~ Ericka P. 9/3/02
The Terrorist, Caroline Cooney
The book is about a young girl whos brother was killed by bomb after being handed a package by a stranger at a London Train Station. She often gets the urge to go hunt for her brother's killer. Someone sho she was fond of, needed her brothers passport to escape so she said yes. When they got to the airport things about Jehran (her friend) were let out. I would recommend this book for someone who likes suspense because it is a interesting suspense. ~Amy B. 9/3/02
Firestarter, Stephen King
A lot of people saw the movie; the book is a lot like it. It is about a girl who has the power to start fires and as they say she can "push" things with her mind. I would and would not recommend it. I would because it is an interesting book. I would not because it has inappropriate words. ~ Jasmine G., 9/4/02
The World Almanac For Kids 2002, Elaine Israel
The book is based really on different kinds of information like sports, space, religion, and more. The section I read was space. It talked about the stars, our galaxy, and space stations. I learned about the planets moons and how there still looking for life on planets. I also learned how long it takes for our earth to orbit around the sun. I also learned about astroids. I really learned about space and how our technology will be better to see if life really lives on different planets. ~ Tiffany J. 9/4/02
The Wish
This is a very interesting book. It's about a girl who is unpopular and invisible, so one day she gave up her bus seat to an old lady, who then asked the girl to make a wish. So she becomes popular and so on. You should read it and find out the rest. ~Umbreen K. 9/5/02
The Cay, Theodore Talor
The book is about back in the 1940s when the war was going on The boy Phillip was leaving their island Curacao because of the was and the submarines shot their boat. Silver Days is a book about a girl named Lisa who moved to America from Germany to get away from war. But they have a lot of troubles in America. I would recommend this book because it is about history and how WWII started. Also, how other religions were treated way back then. ~Shannon C. 9/4/02
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is about Maya Angelou's life. It covers many topics such as racism and prejudice. Though this book has some strong content I would still recommend this book to any other students that are mature enought to handle it. This book was very moving and uplifing. Alanna the First Adventure, Tamora Pierre
This book was a science-fiction/fantasy novel. It was about two twins (boy and girl) who traded places so one could be a knight and the other a sorcerer. Since girls weren't allowed to be knights, Alanna disguised herself is a boy and went to be trained at the palace. She befriends Prince Jonathan and the Rought of the Theives. This book was very interesting and I would recommend it to anyone who likes these types of books. ~Becky G. 9/4/02
Anne of Green Gables, L.M. Montgomery
This book is about an orphan named Anne Shirley who is adopted. He adoptive parents meant to adopt a boy, but adopted her instead. At first they were going to give her back, but they liked her and she changed everyone in the town. I reccomend this book a lot.
Ella Enchanted, Gail Carson
I would recommend this book because I think fairy stories are exciting and fun to read. I would also recommend this book because I liked it and I'm sure other kids would too. I would like to read more books like Ella Enchanted because it makes books look more interesting to read and it makes you want ot read more. Another reason why I recommend this book is because it gets you into reading it, and when the book ends, you never want it to.
Just Ella, Margaret Peterson Haddix
Just Ella is about a teenage girl who went to the ball and was chosen to marry Prince Charming. But, when she lived with the roayl family it was not what she expected. Ella's life was endangered by the prince. She escaped from the palace and ran away so no one can find her. Eventually Ella settles into a normal life.
I Am the Cheese, Robert Cormier
In the book I Am the Cheese there is a boy that wants to visit his father, but he wants to do it on his own, so he goes on his bike. Many different things happened while he was on his way. He was also with a doctor trying to figure out his past. As you keep reading you find many interesting things. I recommend this book because the book leaves many cliff hangers, it is a mystery, and it is interesting. ~ Shashi A. 8/30/02
Among the Hidden, Margaret Peterson Haddix
In a place where there is famine, any third child born into a family is supposed to be killed. In this book there is a third child, a boy, and he had to live in the attic. He met a girl that was also a third child, but she was killed in a protest. The population police started to watch the boy's neighborhood, so the boy had to mave away from his family at age twelve. I recommend this book because it is full of drama and suspense. ~Sashi A. 8/30/02
Murdered, My Sweet, Joan Lowery Nixon
This book is about a girl and her mom. Her mom is lost in her own world trying to solve a mystery. So, the girl helps her mom by making it seem that her mom is solving the mystery. Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson
Treasure Island is about a boy named Jim Hawkins and his friends who sail out to Treasure Island to find the buried treasure of Captain Flint. But the crew of their own ship was made of Flint's former crew and they are led by a one-legged pirate named Long John Silver. So Jim and his friends had to find the treasure and leave quickly. Fortunaltey they did. I would recommend this book because it is very exciting, and it has many surprises. ~ Erica L. 8/30/02
