What are the MYP Global Contexts?

The six global contexts are the lenses through which students engage with their disiplinary studies. By inquiring into the big ideas of a range of academic disciplines, students are encouraged to both learn about subject matter in depth and to make connections between and among subject areas and between their classroom experiences and the world outside the classroom. The global contexts, which inform teaching and learning throughout the MYP, serve as a means of linking subjects to one another through focused inquiry.

 

IDENTITIES AND RELATIONSHIPS 

  •  Who am I? Who are we?

Students explore the nature of the self, identity and human relationships within communities and cultures.  

 

ORIENTATION IN TIME AND PLACE 

  • What is the meaning of "where" and "when"?

Students explore the relationship between past and present in terms of both individual histories and the development of civilizations.

 

PERSONAL AND CULTURAL EXPRESSION 

  • What is the nature and purpose of creative expression?

Students explore the creative process and the ways in which human beings represent themselves and their various cultures through artistic means.

 

SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION 

  • How do we understand the world in which we live?

Students explore the natural world, its laws and how humans interact with it, while also considering the ways in which scientific and technological pursuits impact the natural world and alter our interaction with it.

 

GLOBALIZATION AND SUSTAINABILITY 

  • How is everything connected?

Students explore the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities on the level of the local and global, the national and international.

 

FAIRNESS AND DEVELOPMENT 

  • What are the consequences of our common humanity?

Students explore rights and responsibilities, the charing of finite resources and the ways in which we live together.
