Office of the Chief Technology Officer

Sherwin Collette, Chief Technology Officer

MAJOR INITIATIVES

myMCPS
myMCPS is a role-based secure Web environment that enables all MCPS staff and other appropriate staff access to curriculum, applications, reports, and communication services through single sign-on that supports creativity, self-reliance and development of online professional learning communities to support students’ academic success.

Applicant Tracking System (ATS)
ATS is a Web-based software application that enables the comprehensive electronic handling of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) recruitment needs. It includes a career site, allowing Office of Human Resources or hiring managers to post jobs that can be viewed through links from the MCPS website to the career site, as a way to attract internal and external candidates. Principals will be able to review candidate qualifications online and track the status of a candidate through the hiring process.

Online IEP
The Online IEP system is a web-based application that will use the State IEP form but will also streamline student information from several MCPS databases. This coordination of student information in one central database results in better service to parents and students.

Identity and Access Management system
The identity and access management suite (IAM) will automatically create user accounts for new employees and students, providing more timely access to appropriate computer resources. The suite will also enable us to use Single Sign-on for various systems so that users do not need to remember so many passwords. Implementing this system will provide better risk management for MCPS data by requiring varying levels of password complexity and producing reports that display which users have access to which systems.

21st Century Interactive Classroom Expansion
The 21st Century Interactive Classroom expansion saw the installation of interactive whiteboard technologies in approximately two-thirds of all secondary classrooms during the 2008–2009 school year. This model provides interactive whiteboards, projectors, student response systems, and other audiovisual technologies to enhance teaching and learning. The timely expansion of the 21st century interactive classroom technologies initiative provided all secondary schools increased opportunities for promoting critical thinking and student-directed learning. The 21st century interactive classrooms integrate technology to make learning more authentic for students by supporting direct instruction with hands-on learning.

Grading and Reporting—Elementary OARS – The Elementary Online Achievement and Reporting System (OARS) is aligned with the implementation of the grading and reporting policy. OARS saves time for teachers and administrators by seamlessly producing student progress reports, interim reports, and report cards. In Grades 1–5, OARS comprises an electronic standards-based grade book linked to a standards-based report card. OARS will be implemented in Grades 4–5 in 25 elementary schools during 2009–2010 and will be phased into additional schools and grade levels in subsequent school years.

Human Resources Information System
The HRIS system will be enhanced this fall to allow payroll timekeepers to access HRIS/PACs via the web. This will give the system a cleaner look, an easier method for printing and will allow the use of the network id to sign in.
