AC Milan defeats Liverpool F.C. 2-1 in Athens

Liverpool dominated Milan in the first half and was the better team in the second half, but ultimately failed to score when it mattered. Liverpool dominated ball possession in the first half, and Jermaine Pennant frequently beat Milan defender Marek Jankulovski on the right wing, but the Reds could not break through the Rossoneri's back line. Milan's chances in the first half were few and far between, but free kick specialist Andrea Pirlo broke through for Milan when his attempt from 22 yards out took a deflection off striker Filippo Inzaghi and got past Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina. The second half was a bit more even, with Milan getting some solid runs out of Kaka and Inzaghi. Liverpool continued to control the ball but couldn't come up with a goal. Inzaghi scored again late in the second half on a pass from Kaka, this time beating Reina by running deep into the six yard box and sliding the ball under Reina's outstretched arms. Dirk Kuyt scored on a deflected header in the last five minutes but it was too little too late for the Reds, who couldn't come up with an equalizer. The loss made Liverpool the runners-up in the 2006-2007 UEFA Champions League.
