Goals for Girls (GFG) is a mentoring program for 8th grade girls. It is a partnership between Gaithersburg Middle School, the American Association of University Women and the Gaithersburg business community. This year we are celebrating our tenth year anniversary.
Our Vision
Our vision is that girls who participate in GFG use their school experience effectively as a stepping stone to their future.
The thirty-four mentors are professional women from the Gaithersburg area. They meet individually with each mentee twice a month. During these sessions, the mentors share their experiences and how their choices helped them achieve professional goals. Mentors help the girls to explore careers, develop a high school plan, discuss cyber safety, and accompany them on college tours. Mentors and students are matched with common interests such as science or music.
Parents are acquainted with the GFG program at Parent Night where mentors and girls come together to meet, greet and learn about the program. Our culminating activity is a celebratory Tea. Once again, families of the girls are invited along with their mentors to listen as the girls relate their experiences of how GFG has made a positive difference in their lives. The highlight of the evening is listening to a guest speaker who shares “her road to success” and inspires and encourages the girls to maximize their potential.
