Eastern Middle School Attendance

Regular attendance is important for student success. Some absences are unavoidable, including illness, medical appointments, a death in the immediate family, and certain emergencies. Travel-related absences are unexcused.

Reporting an Absence

Parents/guardians should report absences using the Attendance Google Form

Written notes must be turned into the attendance secretary. The note must include:

  • Student’s legal first and last name
  • Student ID
  • Date of absence/tardy
  • Reason for absence/tardy
  • Parent/guardian signature
  • Daytime phone number

Students can make up missed work for excused absences only. Work missed during unexcused absences may not be accepted. Absences lasting three or more consecutive days require a physician's note, as required by state law. Please note that vacations are considered unexcused absences.

Tardy Policy

Students are considered tardy if they are not in first period by 8:15 a.m. Students arriving late for an excused reason must be signed in by a parent/guardian and provide a written excuse.

Students arriving after 8:15 a.m. without an excuse must sign in at the main office before going to class.

Early Dismissal

For an early dismissal, students should bring a signed parent/guardian note to the attendance secretary in the morning. Students may only be released to individuals authorized in MCPS records or by written parent permission.

The person picking up the student must show a valid photo ID and sign the dismissal log.

Important: Early dismissals end at 2:45 p.m. After that time, students will be dismissed at the regular 3:00 p.m. dismissal.
