5th Grade Chorus will perform at RMHS Cluster Concert - Wednesday, 1/30RSVP needed by this Friday, 1/25

Dear 5th grade parents,
On Wednesday, January 30th, the 5th grade chorus will be performing as part of the annual Cluster Concert at Richard Montgomery High School at 7:30 pm. The snow date for this performance is Wednesday, February 6th. This will be a fantastic opportunity for students collaborate with their peers from the other local elementary schools, as well as the choral students from Richard Montgomery High School. The College Gardens 5th grade chorus will be performing two pieces on their own, as well as two pieces with the combined choirs.

Our first Community Dinner/Fundraising Night this year will be at Mama Lucia in Fallsgrove on January 31st from 5-10 pm. Invite your friends, family and neighbors to come dine and enjoy a fun time with our College Gardens community. Mama Lucia will donate 20% of sales for the night to the PTA, which enables us to continue supporting our school. Dine in, carry-out and delivery is included. (see flyer)

College Gardens Cultural Heritage Night is on Friday, March 15, 2013 from 6 PM to 9 PM. Come celebrate various cultures, taste ethnic food and watch performances by the various CGES kids. Volunteers are always needed, so if you would like to participate, please fill out the attached forms and return to your teacher by Feb 22nd.

The quality of our children’s education can not be compromised by concerns for their safety. Hear from our elected officials, MCPS security department, our local police and those responsible for the safe environment in our community what is being done to keep our children safe and how we can help. The Montgomery County Council of PTAs Safety Committee, led by Donna Pfeiffer and Susan Burkinshaw, brought everyone to the table for a riveting discussion on January 16, 2013, that was covered widely by local media and will be re-broadcast in its entirety over the next few weeks. This topic is meaningful to everyone in Montgomery County, so please do widely share this announcement to permit everyone the opportunity to be a part of staying safe.
MCPS TV will air the entire event on Saturdays and Sundays at 9:30pm January 26 & 27 and February 2 & 3 as well as Tuesday, January 22 at 4pm on Comcast channel 34, Verizon channel 36 and RCN channel 89.

Superintendent Joshua P. Starr is spending the day in your community, on Monday, January 28. Dr. Starr will spend the day meeting with staff and visiting schools in the Churchill, Richard Montgomery, Poolesville, Rockville, and Wootton clusters.
At 7:30 p.m., Dr. Starr will hold a Town Hall meeting for parents and community members, where you can ask him questions and share your thoughts.

The Board also will conduct two work sessions on the budget on Tuesday, Jan. 22 and Thursday, Jan. 24. These sessions are open to the public. On Feb. 12, the Board is scheduled to vote on the Superintendent’s recommended operating budget for FY2014.

Mrs. Eldred, CGES ESOL Teacher, is in need of Starbucks-sized paper bags with handles for Family Math & Science Night. The color and printing on the bag doesn't matter. Please donate bags by the end of February by sending in via your child's communication folder ("For Mrs. Eldred") or drop off at the school office.

Happy New Year!
The Board of Education discussed mathematics at last week's board meeting on 1/8/13. Our acting principal, Mrs.Rogovoy, presented math information at our December forum. If you would like to stay abreast of the changes to the mathematics curriculum, please read the following links. More parental communication is forth coming.

Special Occasion Book Club |

Don’t forget that you can donate a new book to the Media Center as a way to celebrate a birthday, holiday, special achievement or to show teacher appreciation. For a minimum donation of $10.00 your child will be able to select a book from one of our new arrivals. A bookplate will be placed inside the front cover identifying the student and occasion being honored. A certificate will be given to the honoree and the student will be the first person to check out the book. Once it is returned, the book will be available for general circulation. This is a great way to recognize a special occasion or person and also help increase our Media Center collection.
New Lineup of Parent Academy Workshops |

The MCPS Parent Academy offers parents and community members the opportunity to attend free workshops that provide information, resources, tools and tips to support their children’s success in school. The winter season of workshops will begin on Jan. 9. Don’t miss sessions on college and career planning, understanding ADHD and effective parenting.
Parent Academy workshops are free. Childcare and interpretation services will be provided at all sessions. A full list of courses is available on the Parent Academy website.
