5th Grade Photos for the YearbookPhotos & Quotes due Thursday, 2/28 |

5th Grade Students and Parents, the yearbook needs your help! We will be doing some special pages for the 5th graders only in the yearbook. In addition to the yearbook portraits, we are planning to include a Kindergarten photo and publish a quote for each 5th grade student in the yearbook. Please see the attached flyers for more information in either Word or PDF format. Our preference is to receive this information electronically, so please submit your child's kindergarten photo and quote to cgesyearbook@gmail.com by February 28. Thanks everyone!
Help the CGES Media Center receive FREE books from Scholastic! Please submit UPC's/Labels by Thursday, 2/28 |

Labels for Education and Scholastic have partnered together for an incredible promotion. If our school submits 2,000 UPCs/Labels by the end of March, the media center will receive 10 FREE books from Scholastic! We are on our way to this goal, but definitely need your help. If each family at College Gardens submits just 1 UPC/Label, we’ll be able to reach this goal in no time.
This promotion is based on the number of UPCs/Labels, not the point value, so every UPC truly counts. Unfortunately, bonus points and certificates do not count towards the total for this promotion (but will count towards the school’s point balance).
To submit UPCs/Labels, you can use a collection sheet. However, it may be easier to send the UPCs in a zip-top baggie or sealed envelope. Please use whatever is most convenient for your family. We need the UPCs/Labels submitted to your child’s teacher by February 28. Mark the sheets/baggies with your child’s teacher’s name to receive points for the effort with the Box Tops promotion. It’s truly win-win!
If you have any questions about the Labels for Education program or this offer for FREE books for our school’s media center, please contact Laura Laudenberger at lauralauden@yahoo.com.
CGES students, apply your knowledge, art skills and creativity to encourage people to take ACTION that promotes a healthy Mother Earth. Represent College Gardens in the SERT (School Energy & Recycling Team) poster contest! Submit a poster that promotes:
- Energy Conservation
- Water Conservation
- Recycling
One poster from the Kindergarten - 2nd grade category and one from the 3rd – 5th grade category will be forwarded to the countywide competition! Teachers will be available to support students in writing their poster description. We encourage participants to create rough designs, have them critiqued by peers and teachers (especially Mr. Cousin and Mr. Karpf), make revisions, and then create their final version. Deadline: 4:00 pm, Tuesday, March 5th.

![]() |
MCPS is holding a Community Dialogue on the Academic Success of the African American Student on Saturday, March 2. The event will be held from 8:30 a.m.–4 p.m. at The People’s Community Baptist Church, 31 Norwood Road in Silver Spring.
The event is free and open to staff, parents, students and community members who want to work together to help African American students prepare for college and the world of work. This meeting is the first of several activities and actions that have been planned to engage the MCPS community in an effort to increase and support student performance and narrow the achievement gap.
MCPS staff and community leaders will talk about innovative strategies and programs at work in Montgomery County to help students succeed. The day’s agenda will include an overview of achievement gap data, presentations from youth and youth-serving organizations, and a discussion of solutions and potential partnerships. Participants will work to create a framework for increased academic achievement for African American students in MCPS.
If you wish to attend, RSVP by Monday, Feb. 25. For more information, contact the Office of Community Engagement and Partnerships at 301-279-3074 or visit the website.
Classroom donations for Pennies for Patients has ended, but if you meant to donate and never got a chance, there is still time! You can donate online here and the donations will still count towards College Gardens fundraising totals. Please make your online donations by Friday, March 8th.
