Join the PTA NOW!

Please join the CGES PTA for the 2011-2012 school year by completing the membership form (and School Directory collection form) HERE

Did you know that you have to join (and pay dues) every year? The PTA is a non-profit organization and all of your dues go straight back to the students. Events like the Cultural Heritage Night, Picnics, Cultural Arts Assemblies to name a few are all sponsored financially by the PTA. Without your membership and dues, these events would not happen.

Also, the PTA has partnered with Mr. Ewald to purchase the technology that is necessary to equip our portable classrooms with the same technologies as our regular classrooms. We need your membership so we can continue to support the school as well.

Flyer Dissemination Help (Wednesday Packets)

Starting on Wednesday, September 7th (which is outside flyer day) and every Wednesday morning, a team volunteers will collate flyers to be disseminated to the students. We start at 9:30 and can use your help. Typically, the team is finished by 11am, and there are usually baked refreshments to keep your hunger at bay. Contact Rachel Navarro at: rsnavarro@comcast.net.

NewsFlash Subscriptions

As you know, CGES and the PTA use the weekly NewsFlash to communicate important information to our families. Do you know an incoming family? Ask them to subscribe by sending an email to info@cgespta.org so we can help keep them informed.

CGES Kids Run Club Registration Closed

Message from CGES Kids Run Club Coaches, Julie Sapper and Jen Green:

We are so excited that the CGES Kids Run Club has generated so much interest! Although we previously set a September 6th application deadline, we have already received an overwhelming number of applications, and, as a result, we have closed registration as of Wednesday evening. We are currently working on ways to adjust the program to accomodate more than 25 participants, and we will provide further information within the week. Thank you!

Brit-AM Soccer

Brit-Am Soccer Academy is Montgomery County, Maryland and Washington D.C.'s premier provider of professional youth soccer coaching services. It‘ll offer two after-school programs in CGES in the Fall of school year 2011-2012 on Thursdays. Click here for the registration flyer.

Tots class - Each session will concentrate on teaching each player, the rules of the game, and basic techniques. This will be done by the use of small games such as some of the kid’s favorites, sharks and minnows, stuck in the mud, red light-green light, Cowboys and Indians and the Blob. All these games will help develop motor skills and cognitive abilities.

Pre-Academy class - As the children become more experienced they will be taken through more advanced classes and team games. All of the important skills needed to become a good soccer player will be covered through the use of structured games but not boring drills. Each session will also end with a scrimmage with the main emphasis on teamwork and sportsmanship.

CGES Dance Club

Dance is coming to College Gardens Elementary School. A combination tap/jazz/ballet class will be offered in a 10 week fall session and a 10 week spring session to be held on Tuesdays. The spring session will end with a performance at Cultural Heritage Night. A class will be offered to kindergarten through second grade students and a second class for third through fifth. More details to come in a flyer.

RECESS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We desperately need parents to assist in making recess a fun and positive experience for our kids. To make this possible we are asking for one or two individual from each grade to take the lead in organizing volunteers to help in this effort. Studies show that recess is often a time where children experience bullying and teasing. College Garden wants to discourage this type of behavior. Having an extra set of eyes goes a long way toward assuring that playtime is fun for everyone. If you would like to be a part of this project please e-mail Kathy DeLoia-Gibney at kdgjobs@comcast.net. Our goal is to provide have at least one volunteer for each 30 minute period. Your children will enjoy seeing their parents take part an active role in their school!

"From Russia with Music, Dance and lots of Love"

The first PTA Cultural Arts assembly will be held on Thursday, October 6 at 9:45am (grades Headstart, K, 1, 2) and 2:30pm (grades 3,4,5) in the APR. The performer will be Barynya and will be performing their show "From Russia with Music, Dance and lots of Love". Parents, guardians and siblings are welcome to attend. If you cane help set up for this event, please contact Jen Green at: hahleewude@verizon.net

Clip those Box Tops!

Did you clip and collect your Box Tops all summer? Be sure to continue to help your school earn easy money by clipping Box Tops for Education by bringing them into school. College Gardens receives 10 cents for every box top we turn in for this program, and last year we earned over $1000! Thanks to everyone who helped us achieve this big goal!

There is a complete listing of box tops products on the PTA website or you can visit www.boxtops4education.com. The program includes products like Ziploc bags, Cheerios, El Paso taco products, Hamburger Helper, Hefty products, Gogurt, Pillsbury & the list goes on. You can also register with this website and learn of other no cost ways to raise funds for College Gardens.

Office Depot gives 5% back to CGES

Office Depot is giving schools 5% of what each customer spends on school supplies if the customer asks it to be credited to the school. College Gardens is now listed on the display (written in), so be sure they entered the code for CGES (70047229) at the register. CGES can earn money for school supplies or cash back.

Labels for Education Campbell's Labels for Education

Along with collecting Box Tops, the PTA will also be participating in the Labels for Education program. Basically CGES earns points (which turns in free "stuff") by parents clipping UPC codes and bottle caps. To view a list of participating items, go to: http://www.labelsforeducation.com/Earn/participating-products.aspx. There are thousands of products that we can turn into "stuff" for our school. Examples: BIC (pens), Campbell's soup, Glad products, Pop Secret, Dannon kids yogurt, Time magazines, and V8 beverages to name a few.

So before you throw that UPC into the trash, double check because you could be throwing away $$$$. Simply collect the UPCs and when your "bag" is full, turn them into your classroom teacher. For questions or to help, contact our Labels for Education Coordinator Sylva Kholanian-Faul at sylvakf@gmail.com.
