4th and 5th Grade Chorus Concert - TOMORROW, Tuesday, 4/30 @ Richard Montgomery HS

rm_cluster_concert

Dear 4th and 5th grade parents and guardians,

As hard as it is to believe, our final chorus concert for this school year is quickly approaching! Please make sure to mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 30th at 7pm at Richard Montgomery High School. We are very excited to share our music with you, and we’re thrilled to be able to perform in a venue like Richard Montgomery!

On that evening, students are asked to arrive in the auditorium at Richard Montgomery by 6:40pm so that we can find places for all students before the performance begins at 7pm.

Attire will be as follows:

  • 4th graders: dark pants and shoes and a light t-shirt. They will be borrowing chorus t-shirts from me that evening.
  • 5th graders: dark pants and shoes and their green 5th grade t-shirt

As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions at sarah_n_meadows@mcpsmd.org. I look forward to seeing you on the 30th at Richard Montgomery HS!

-Mrs. Meadows

PTA Cultural Arts Assembly - Wednesday, 5/8

marc_tyler_nobleman

We are holding the last PTA-sponsored Cultural Arts assembly of the school year on Wednesday, May 8th. Local author and cartoonist Marc Tyler Nobleman will be visiting our students.

The assembly times and grades are as follows:

  • 9:35-10:35am - grades 3-5
  • 2:30-3:15pm - grades K-2

Please note the change from usual - the older grades are going in the morning and the younger grades in the afternoon. Also note the extended time in the morning. Both shows are in the APR.

If you can help at either assembly (with light setup, seating students, etc...), please let me know as soon as possible at nvankos@juno.com. I will not be able to be there in the afternoon, so I especially could use volunteers then. I would like volunteers to arrive around 9-ish for the morning assembly and 2pm for the afternoon one, if possible.

Thank you,
Natalie Vankos

Box Tops Update

box_tops_promotion

Ms. Hafer’s Class is still in FIRST PLACE (Ms. Hernanadez’s class is really close though…)

Don’t forget that the Race to the End Box Top Competition ends May 24th. The class that turns in the most Box Tops will get to keep the money that they raise from the Box Tops for this period. The winning class gets to decide on what they would like to do with the winnings. So, if the winning class turns in 1000 Box Tops, that class gets to spend $100!!!

If the competition ended today, Ms. Hafer’s class would be getting over $30.00 to spend on anything they want!!! How cool is that!! Does your class want to get $30 to spend on anything you want??? If so, start sending in those Box Tops!!! Please remember only valid, unexpired Box Tops will be counted.

Start sending Box Tops to school now!!!! If you need collection sheets, they can be found at: http://www.boxtops4education.com/Image.aspx?id=6671

Don’t forget to put the teacher’s name on your sheets.

Teachers: Please submit all of your collected Box Tops in the Box Tops box every Friday. Any loose Box Tops should be put into a baggie with your name on it. I can’t credit your class if your name isn’t on it.

If you have any questions regarding the Race to the End competition, please email me at BoxTops_CGES@yahoo.com.

Labels for Education Update

labels_for_education_logo

The Spring Labels for Education competition is still going strong, but we are in the closing 3 weeks! Remember, the class rewards are the highly-coveted EXTRA RECESS (first place) and a lunch bunch with staff member(s) of the class's choice (second place)! The competition is actually divided into two mini-contests in the school – one for grades K-2 and another for grades 3-5. For grades K-2, Mrs. Adams’s class holds their lead, but Mrs. Hafer’s class rocketed into second place on April 19! Mrs. Hernandez, Mrs. Gretz, Mrs. Asadullah, and Mrs. Tubiolo follow. For the grades 3-5 contest, Mrs. Rueda’s class continues with their lead, followed by Mrs. Birrer, Ms. Floyd, and Mrs. Pockett. Submit your Labels by May 17!

Please note: We are in special need of Labels from Campbell’s and Pepperidge Farm products. If you have any of these at home, PLEASE send them in.

If you have any questions about the Labels program, please contact Laura Laudenberger at lauralauden@yahoo.com.

The Spring Book Fair was a Huge Success!

the_love_of_books

It's true what they say about location. By moving the Book Fair to the main lobby, we had the most successful Fair ever! Thank you to everyone who came out! We sold over $16,000 worth of books (approximately 3,200 books), earned $3600 in cash for our school, earned a bonus $3600 in Scholastic Dollars, and put an additional $2500 worth of books throughout the classrooms. We couldn't have done it without you and without our amazing, dedicated volunteers: Jeanette Dexter, Meredith Jendzurski, Rachel Navarro, Kathleen Broadman, Elizabeth Howlett, Diana Marmelstein, Katherine Grossman, I-Hsin McConnell, Tonya Davis, Kathy Bucy, Hilary Bailor, Dianne Cowie, Rupa Raote, Jennifer Halper, Jen Green, Sylva Kholanian-Faul, Emae Voritskul, An Hu, Michelle Senko, Rose McKee, Mary K Pedigo, Stacey Umunna, Jennifer Whalen, Eileen Benavides, and Ping Lin (hopefully I didn't miss anyone).

A very heartfelt thank you to my invaluable team who came out every day and contributed greatly to the Book Fair's success: Karen Hagan, Ron Hays, Nancy Paul, Audrey Romano and Bridget Saywell! In addition, I would like to say thank you to our special student crew: Hannah Hagan, Emma Hagan, Ian Hutchison, Joe Hutchison, Andrew Paul, Sarah Paul, and Theo Saywell. They came in every morning or every afternoon and helped unpack/pack the Fair and we couldn't have done it without them.

Book Fair Chairperson

CGES Health and Wellness Committee... Growing Healthy Kids!

wellness_comittee

The newly formed CGES Health and Wellness Committee is dedicated to ensuring a healthy environment for all College Gardens students. We plan to provide opportunities to learn about healthy foods and participate in activities that support growing minds and bodies! As many of you are aware, there is a national movement to fight childhood obesity and promote healthier lifestyles starting at an early age. The Health and Wellness Committee is reviewing MCPS health policy guidelines and looking at models of school health and wellness programming with the goal of developing guidelines and hosting events that promote individual wellness and align with our PYP focus on global health. We have a number of exciting initiatives in the works and welcome input and energy from the parent & teacher community. If you have ideas to contribute and/or are interested in volunteering for the Health and Wellness Committee, please contact Kirsten Kaplan (kirsten.hausdesign@gmail.com) or Julie Sapper (jegossma@hotmail.com).

Community Dinner at Mama Wok

Any day you can dine-in or take-out

mama_wok

The owner of Mama Wok, Mr. Huang, donated $200 to the PTA on April 12, 2013 to support our programs and services to CGES.  Unlike previous years where we set a date for our community dinner, Mr. Huang doesn’t want to pin down a date this year.  Instead, he encourages our families to dine there at our convenience.  Let’s return Mama Wok’s support by going there to dine-in or take-out.  Don’t forget to tell your server or cashier that you’re from CGES.  Thank you, Mr. Huang, for giving your support and flexibility!
