box_tops_promotion

The Race to the End Box Top Competition ends May 24th.  The class that turns in the most Box Tops will get to keep the money that they raise from the Box Tops for this period.  The winning class gets to decide on what they would like to do with the winnings.  So, if the winning class turns in 1000 Box Tops, that class gets to spend $100!!!

Wow, Ms. Hafer’s class came to play!!!  In just one week, her class turned in enough Box Tops to take the first place position.  In second place, we have Ms. Hernandez’s class and third place is Ms. Tubiolo’s class.

Start sending Box Tops to school now!!!!  If you need collection sheets, they can be found at: http://www.boxtops4education.com/Image.aspx?id=6671

Don’t forget to put the teacher’s name on your sheets.

Teachers:  Please submit all of your collected Box Tops in the Box Tops box every Friday.  Any loose Box Tops should be put into a baggie with your name on it.  I can’t credit you class if your name isn’t on it.

CGES Health and Wellness Committee... Growing Healthy Kids!

wellness_comittee

The newly formed CGES Health and Wellness Committee is dedicated to ensuring a healthy environment for all College Gardens students. We plan to provide opportunities to learn about healthy foods and participate in activities that support growing minds and bodies! As many of you are aware, there is a national movement to fight childhood obesity and promote healthier lifestyles starting at an early age. The Health and Wellness Committee is reviewing MCPS health policy guidelines and looking at models of school health and wellness programming with the goal of developing guidelines and hosting events that promote individual wellness and align with our PYP focus on global health. We have a number of exciting initiatives in the works and welcome input and energy from the parent & teacher community. If you have ideas to contribute and/or are interested in volunteering for the Health and Wellness Committee, please contact Kirsten Kaplan (kirsten.hausdesign@gmail.com) or Julie Sapper (jegossma@hotmail.com).

4th and 5th Grade Chorus Concert - Tuesday, 4/30 @ Richard Montgomery HS

rm_cluster_concert

Dear 4th and 5th grade parents and guardians,

As hard as it is to believe, our final chorus concert for this school year is quickly approaching! Please make sure to mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 30th at 7pm at Richard Montgomery High School. We are very excited to share our music with you, and we’re thrilled to be able to perform in a venue like Richard Montgomery!

On that evening, students are asked to arrive in the auditorium at Richard Montgomery by 6:40pm so that we can find places for all students before the performance begins at 7pm.

Attire will be as follows:

  • 4th graders: dark pants and shoes and a light t-shirt. They will be borrowing chorus t-shirts from me that evening.
  • 5th graders: dark pants and shoes and their green 5th grade t-shirt

As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions at sarah_n_meadows@mcpsmd.org. I look forward to seeing you on the 30th at Richard Montgomery HS!

Community Dinner at Mama Wok

Any day you can dine-in or take-out

mama_wok

The owner of Mama Wok, Mr. Huang, donated $200 to the PTA on April 12, 2013 to support our programs and services to CGES.  Unlike previous years where we set a date for our community dinner, Mr. Huang doesn’t want to pin down a date this year.  Instead, he encourages our families to dine there at our convenience.  Let’s return Mama Wok’s support by going there to dine-in or take-out.  Don’t forget to tell your server or cashier that you’re from CGES.  Thank you, Mr. Huang, for giving your support and flexibility!

Labels for Education Update and "How to Collect" Labels

Labels for Education logo

The Spring Labels for Education promotion has been underway for about a month. As a reminder, class rewards will be done separately for grades K-2 and grades 3-5. The top TWO classrooms from each group will receive:

  • An extra recess period for the class bringing in the most points (both K-2 and 3-5)
  • lunch bunch with CGES staff member(s) of the class’s choice (also K-2 and 3-5)

The current classroom tallies have Mrs. Adam’s class in the lead for grades K-2, with Mrs. Hernandez and Mrs. Gretz close behind. Mrs. Asadullah’s and Mrs. Tubiolo’s classes are right behind Mrs. Gretz! For the grades 3-5 contest, Mrs. Rueda’s class is leading the way, with Mrs. Birrer and Ms. Floyd in second and third place. The collection will run through Friday, May 17.

Please note that it is important to include both the UPC/barcode and the Labels for Education logo when clipping Labels. Unfortunately, we have had to discard about 25 Labels because they did not contain enough of the UPC/barcode. It’s okay to have a tear or part of the UPC missing; however, we must have at least 51% of the UPC to receive credit. Below are some examples of acceptable and non-acceptable Labels.

Acceptable Labels

Non-Acceptable Labels

Keep saving your Labels and submitting to your teachers in a zip-top baggie or sealed envelope. Be sure to include your child’s teacher’s name on the baggie or envelope. If you have any questions about the Labels program, contact Laura Laudenberger at lauralauden@yahoo.com.
