Book Club The Book Club

Welcome to our media center-sponsored book club. We will meet during lunch and recess on Thursdays in the media center.

Focus of Book Club 2013

Our theme this year in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham, is the time period between 1954 and 1976, when our country was coming to terms with Civil Rights. We will discuss and comprehend three historical fiction books that show us different perspectives of this era.

Meeting Dates
(look to see if the date is a link, and click and see what you find!)
April 4: Our preliminary meeting. We discussed meeting guidelines, format, and get our first book! You can always watch the video we discussed today, again to help you with your background knowledge. We are reading to chapter 6, page 74, in the book for our next meeting. Please think about how we can make our club a safe environment for all of you to share your ideas.
April 11: We had a great meeting, discussing the first 74 pages of the book. Big questions -- If we didn't have any clues from the cover of the book, would we know the race of our character family? Why did Curtis introduce Rufus into the story? What is Kenny's big problem at school? We also spent some time reading picture books about the Civil Rights Movement.

We will read to page 138 for our next meeting!

April 25 We had a wonderful meeting with Mrs. White, and I'm sorry many of you missed it. I know Mrs. White blew us all away when she told us she'd met Martin Luther King more than once! Please check out this power point to give you some insight to the Watson's journey to Birmingham, and finish the book for our next meeting. We'll be trading books at our next meeting, too, so make sure you bring your book with you to the meeting. See you next Thursday!
May 2 We completed our discussion about Watsons, and played Watsons Jeopardy! We traded in our books for our new title, Glory Be -- we'll be reading through page 101 and meet in two weeks. If you have not yet traded your book, please come by the media center to do so. I need to return the books to the public library!
May 16 Book Club Cancelled. Please complete your reading of Glory Be by next Thursday. Thank you.
May 23 We had an excellent meeting, watching a video about Freedom summer, listening to Ms. Scattergood read some of her book; and playing a word association game. Everyone is in agreement that Glory Be is simply an excellent book. Please read The Liberation of Gabriel King for our next meeting, on Tuesday, June 4. We also want to share our thoughts on Edmodo. Please have your parents read the information letter, and complete the bottom half and return it to Mrs. Wilson as soon as possible.
May 30 Cancelled
June 6 We had a wonderful meeting to discuss The Liberation of Gabriel King -- this was our last meeting of the year and almost everyone completed the book. I hope you continue contacting each other through Edmodo to discuss the different books you're reading this summer! I had a wonderful time. You were a great book club group!

Titles We're Reading
