REPORT CARDS DISTRIBUTED ON FEBRUARY 1
Parents and guardians - please be aware that report cards will be distributed to students on Wednesday, February 1.
SEMESTER PARKING PERMITS

Parking permits may be purchased within the first couple weeks of each semester. A student parking permit costs $37.50 per semester. Students who wish to purchase parking permits must have parents completely fill out and sign a parking permit form. Students and parents must also sign the semester parking rules for the second semester of the 2011-2012 school year. Both of these forms should be given to Mr. Edward Velasquez ASAP.

COMMUNITY SYMPOSIUM ON SCHOOL BULLYING ON FEBRUARY 4

The Community Symposium on Bullying in Schools will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2012  from 2 - 4 PM at the Silver Spring Civic Building at VeteransPlaza. The symposium, sponsored by the Montgomery County Committee on Hate/Violence (COHV) and the Montgomery County Office of Human Rights, will provide parents, teachers, school administrators, students and community leaders the opportunity to discuss and explore with panel experts a range of topics regarding the prevention and intervention of bullying in our schools. This program is free and open to the public.

BASKETBALL SENIOR NIGHT ON FEBRUARY 10

Students and their families are invited to join the varsity basketball teams for Senior Night on Friday, February 10 when the teams host Paint Branch. Senior Night is an opportunity honor the players who will be graduating this year. The boys team will play at 5:15 PM while the girls team plays at 7 PM.

Students with a parent and the attached flyer: FREE
Students12 and over: $3
Children 7 -11: $1
Adults: $5

CONGRATULATIONS MR. MILLER!
Northwood High School is honored to congratulate Mr. Erol Miller for winning the 2012 Chesapeake Bay Trust's Teacher of the Year award! The Trust recognizes outstanding Maryland teachers who engage students in their local community and the environment. Mr. Miller's numerous accomplishments include the creation of the Northwood Chesapeake Bay Trail and leading a team of teachers and students who developed a Maryland Green School application that garnered praise from the U.S. Department of Education. CONGRATULATIONS BOCCE TEAM!

Congratulations to Gerber Alvarez, Roberto Delcid, Caroline Ebbay, Stinson Mackie, Brian Sosa, Thomas Stallone, and Coach Tracy Roberts! This past Saturday, the Bocce team competed in a tournament of four schools (Whitman, Kennedy, B-CC and Northwood) and finished in first place after winning all four of its games.  The team boasts a record of 5 and 1 and will compete in the regional playoff tournament this Saturday at Northwood in the main gym. Admission is free.

CONGRATULATIONS FORENSICS TEAM!

Congratulations to Kiva Brick, Hannah Sophie Hirsch, Abel Jimenez, Arthur Kraus, Sherry Muolo, Ariela Sirota, Caitlin Wright, and their coach Christopher Goodrich! After three Qualifying Tournaments, these students will compete this Friday and Saturday at the Forensics Finals.

CONGRATULATIONS ICE HOCKEY TEAM!
After defeating Poolesville, 10-0, the Montgomery Blair/Northwood team is tied with Damascus for first place in the standings. This Friday the team plays Damacus in a game that will determine who takes sole possession of first place. Good luck team!

Congratulations are in order for the Northwood Poms and Coach Danielle Hagan who earned second place overall and first place captain’s awards from the Northwest Invitational this past weekend.

NORTHWOOD PTSA SCHOLARSHIP

NHS PTSA Scholarship – Deadline:  February 24, 2012

One of the goals of the Northwood PTSA is to encourage students to become lifelong learners. The PTSA decided this year to award $500 scholarships to four students in Northwood’s 2012 graduating class. The scholarships will be awarded to students that are accepted to an accredited post graduate school in the fall of 2012.

Eligibility
To be considered for one of these scholarships, the applicant must:

  • Have a financial need:  FARMS Eligibility at any time of student’s MCPS attendance
  • Be a resident of Montgomery County, Maryland
  • Be a senior who will graduate from Northwood High School in 2012and who will enter an accredited post graduate school as a freshman in the fall of 2012.
