Media Center

The Laytonsville Elementary School media program helps students become information-powered citizens committed to literacy and life-long learning.  The media specialist works collaboratively with all staff to ensure success for every student.

Media Center Hours

  • The Media Center is open for students from 9:05a.m. until 3:45p.m.
  • Students must bring their library card as their pass when they visit.
  • If students see a stop sign, the library is temporarily closed, and they must return to their classrooms right away.
  • Staff may check out materials between 8a.m. and 4:30p.m.  If the circulation computer is not on before or after these hours, staff can leave their books on the counter with a yellow check-out slip and we will take care of them as soon as we get in!

How to Choose a Book

Think about a subject you enjoy or would like to know more about. Perhaps you would like to read another book by an author you have already enjoyed. Decide whether you want fiction or nonfiction. Use the patron's catalog to locate books (their call numbers). When you find the book, look at the cover and illustrations. Read the inside of the book jacket to learn more about the book. Read a page in the book. Use the five-finger rule to decide if the book is too easy or hard for you. If the book fits your need, go check it out! If not, put it back on the shelf in the right spot. Check the other books on the shelf to see if you can find a better choice.
