Writing Research Findings
Throughout the month of November, your students will be working on researching a topic. Throughout this project, students will be able to learn strategies to help them identify relevant information, and will use those strategies to help organize their information more efficiently.
In terms of grammar, students will be working on identifying and writing adverbs, adjectives, and conjunctions. Additionally, we will continue to review what makes a good sentence, what makes a good paragraph, and what makes a good essay.
Math: Just the Facts!
Students in 4th grade math will start unit 2 in November. They will be mastering multiplication and division facts, variables, number patterns, and number relationships. All students need to be practicing their basic multiplication and division facts every night. This can be done by using flashcards, playing games with decks of cards or playing games online. Please notify your student’s math teacher if you need flash cards.
Students in 5th grade math will also start unit 2 in November. They will be identifying, comparing and classifying 2D and 3D figures. They will also be identifying parts of circles and creating circles using compasses. Finally, students will use a protractor to measure angles. Make sure to look for these different geometric shapes in your home and the world around you.

Please encourage your child to study hard and complete their homework every night to be prepared for their upcoming unit assessments!

Reading for Information
In reading, we have just finished our focused on our fables. We learned how authors use the personification to help the reader relate and understand and the characteristics of fables. We studied cause and effect, character motivation, and identified the moral.
In November, we will be diving into informational texts. We will study the text features. Text features include table of contents, index, glossary, headings. sub-headings, etc. We will identify the author’s purpose for writing articles and find bias in information text by searching for facts and opinions. This unit presents a great opportunity for students to examine newspapers, magazines, menus and pamphlets.
Homework Reminders
Please remember that your child will have homework Monday through Thursday nights. Daily homework includes:
~Reading Logs (students need to read at least 30 minutes a night and obtain a parent signature)
~Language Homework
~Reading Homework
~Math Homework
Other homework may be assigned, but your student should have the above every night.
Science Scoop
The fourth grade classes continue to learn about animal habitats. We have been reading books about specific habitats and gathering information to share with the class. We will be learning about food webs and food chains. Please stay tuned for more science information in the next Science Scoop!!
