Principal's Message for February
We had a great first semester of school at Flower Hill Elementary! Our staff is working hard to create learning opportunities for our students. Mrs. Cooke and I have had the opportunity to visit many classrooms. As a result, of these experiences we have been able to see that there is quality education going on at Flower Hill Elementary.
In addition to providing a strong academic focus, we also work very hard making our school a safe, caring environment for both our students and staff. While we continually get positive feedback regarding the climate, we want to continue to make a special effort to reduce bullying behavior in our school. Our goal is to create a greater awareness with our students, staff and parents as to this behavior and what we can do to eliminate it in our school environment.
In the past few months of school, our counselor and Mrs. Cooke have met with students to discuss bullying, sharing with them how bullying occurs and what we want our students to do should they be in a situation involving bullying.
As parents you can support our efforts in reducing bullying in our school in the following ways: 1) Reinforce with your child that bullying behavior is wrong and they need to treat all people with dignity and respect. 2) Contact school personnel should your child share with you that he/she has been bullied in our school. We want to know about this information and we will do whatever we can to make this situation better for your child.
We are having a great school year and we are confident that this will continue. When students, staff and parents work together, great things will happen for every student in our school. As always, thank you for your continued support.

Safe Routes to School Program
Our school has partnered with the Montgomery County’s Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School program. The Safe Routes to School program promotes and encourages safe and active walking and bicycling to and from school. It also provides an opportunity to make walking and bicycling safer and more accessible for children, including those with disabilities, as well as to increase the number of children who chose to walk and bike.
As part of this program we are asking for your participation in a survey regarding your child’s travel mode to and from school. The purpose of the Parent Survey is to understand the factors affecting whether parents allow their children to walk/bike to school, the presence of key safety-related conditions along school routes, and related information.
So, please take a moment to answer this 5 to 10 minute survey.
Your responses are very important to us and will help determine how to improve opportunities for kids. The survey will be open beginning Wednesday, May 18th!
For more information about the Safe Routes to School program please visit http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/walk.

Flower Hill students in grades 3-5 have the wonderful opportunity to practice reading and math skills using the program Study Island from any computer that has internet service. Why use Study Island ? It is a web-based program that is aligned with Maryland state standards with rigorous academic content that is both fun and engaging. It’s also very easy to use. Go to www.studyisland.com and enter your child’s username, then type in the password falcon and your child is ready to practice reading and math skills. Usernames were sent home with each student in grades 3-5, but if you need another copy, contact your child’s teacher. Problems with the site? Call Flower Hill ES for help.
