We hope everyone had a wonderful spring break. It will be wonderful when the temperature finally feels like spring. As always, thank you so much for all of your support.

Students have been hard at work practicing TN2 skills including language arts, basic math skills, and language mechanics. We appreciate the parent support with the TN2 homework packets. As always, students are expected are to read every day!

Homework

 writing

All second graders have received a homework folder that he/she needs to bring home every day, and then back to school the next day. Please check it for homework assignments, completed work, and notes from your child’s teacher. Look for the monthly Go for the Green calendar. Please sign each day so we know that you are aware of your child’s behavior.

Reading & Writing

Our second graders have also written opinion pieces. They are learning to state their opinions and give reasons for them. They have practiced using transition words to make their writing flow more smoothly, and have learned to use concluding statements at the end. We have been working with different parts of speech, compound words, contractions, pronouns, and continue to practice using correct punctuation and capitalization.

We continue working on plot, main idea, and text features to develop comprehension, decoding, and fluency in whole group, as well as small group. We will also be learning poetry techniques and applying those techniques to our own poems.

Math

       addition

In quarter 3, we developed a deeper understanding of measurement, problem solving, time, and fractions. We learned how to make fractions using equal parts. We had fun using Pentomino pieces and geometry shapes to make different ways to show halves, thirds, and fourths. Students also created arrays in many different ways. Come look at our bulletin boards for the results. In quarter 4, students will be focusing on addition and subtraction with three digit numbers. Remember second graders are expected to know their facts by the end of the fourth quarter. Don’t forget to practice those facts at home too!

Social Studies and Science

Our science unit this quarter will include the continued study of life cycles. This spring we will be studying butterflies from tiny larvae to mature butterflies. We just got word that the eggs are on their way! There will be a Butterfly Release ceremony once our butterflies have all come out of their chrysalises. We will update you as to the date of this fun event.
