Second Graders are staying super busy!
Please continue to support your children by encouraging them to read and to practice the basic math facts. Check your child’s book bag and homework folder every day. Thank you so much for your continued support and cooperation.

Homework
|
All second graders have received a homework folder that he/she needs to bring home every day, and then back to school the next day. Please check it for homework assignments, completed work, and notes from your child’s teacher. Look for the monthly Go for the Green calendar. Please sign each day so we know that you are aware of your child’s behavior.

Reading & Writing
|
We have been reading and practicing writing good responses to the text. In writing, the children will start writing opinions and stating reasons to support them. We will develop more sentence fluency, organization, and use linking words to connect ideas. Students will practice expanding and rearranging sentences and using commas in letters. They are learning to give details, and will be working more on topic sentences. We have been continuing to learn more spelling rules, and improve our daily spelling and applying what we know to our writing. We have just completed our winter mClass reading assessments, and are so proud of the progress our second graders have made! Students will continue to practice using context clues to help determine the meaning of unknown words. In addition, students are developing a better understanding of the story structure and characters’ response to events and challenges. Keep up the good work by reading, reading, reading!

Math
|
In math, we are studying linear measurement units: centimeters and meters. Students made their own meter rulers using 100 centimeters grouped into ten tens. They enjoyed measuring objects in the classroom and at home. We will be using number lines to 100 and continue practicing our mental math strategies for solving our basic facts. Don’t forget to practice at home so they know their facts to 20 by the end of the year.

Social Studies and Science
|
During our exciting science unit we will be learning about the description of the sun and the moon and the sky during the day and night. Students will work cooperatively to make observations and identify properties of the moon. In social studies students will be exploring the affects technology has had on our daily life and transportation: past and present.
