NEWS!

Congratulations to the 2009 and 2010 Chips staff and to the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 faculty sponsors, Rachel Gold and Dawn Charles, respectively!  The awesome 2009 issue of B-CC’s literary arts magazine has been awarded a Gold Medalist rating from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association and is being considered for Crown Awards.  Bravo to all for their hard work on the publication and commitment to a long-standing tradition of excellence in the literary and creative arts!

History

Chips, Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School’s annual literary magazine, first began life as an offshoot of the yearbook, The Pine Tree, in 1937 – hence the name Chips. Since then, it has grown to become one of the most honored high school literary magazines in the country. The 2005 issue alone received a Gold Medal award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, and the Highest Award from the National Council of Teachers of English. Chips is an uncensored magazine, run by students who not only decide what gets into the magazine, but also raise money, sell ads, and create layout of the final product. More importantly, Chips allows for a stimulating atmosphere where artists, writers, photographers, and musicians can be a part of something that encourages creativity amongst themselves and their peers.

Awards

Chips has received numerous awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (the “CSPA”), including the Gold Medal Award (2001 through 2009), the Gold Circle Award (2002), the Gold Crown Award (2000 and 1996) and the Silver Crown Award (2001 and 1995). It also received the Highest Award from the National Council of Teachers of English in 2001, 2002 and 2005 and the Best in Show Award from the Journalism Education Association in 2001.
