How are GT/LD students first recognized?

  • When educators and parents are aware of GT/LD characteristics and recognize the pattern of strengths and weaknesses within the student.
  • School teams begin problem-solving using Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) and/or Educational Management Team (EMT) guidelines. They make recommendations and document the student's response to interventions and supports.

How are GT/LD students formally identified for IEP services?

  • The school team may make a referral to the school IEP team if (after implementation of CPS and EMT recommendations), the student is not progressing as expected.
  • Parents may make a referral to the school IEP team. See the GT/LD Advocacy Guide for Parents for tips for being an effective advocate for your child. Upon referral, a screening IEP team meeting will be held to review data, to determine whether an educational disability is suspected, and if so, to determine the need for further assessment/testing.
  • For more information on CPS, EMT, and special education procedures, see the Problem Solving for Student Success guide.
