Assessment

Return to the Parent Handbook Page.

In addition to on-going assessment which takes place in all classrooms, students in Grades 3, 4 and 5 will take the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) in language arts/literacy and mathematics in May. MCAP replaced the PARCC assessment for reading and mathematics.

Students in Grades 3 -5 are also administered the Measures of Academic Progress in Reading (MAP-R) during the fall, winter, and spring. Kindergarten, first and second grade students participate in the Measures of Academic Progress in Reading Fluency (MAP-RF) during the fall, winter and spring. The MAP-R and MAP-RF assessments are used to provide teachers with accurate data to ensure that all students are receiving instruction on their specific reading level.

Students in grades K –3 will participate in the Measures of Academic Progress—Primary Grades (MAP-P) or Measures of Academic Progress---Mathematics (MAP-M) three times per year. The MAP-P and MAP-M provide opportunities for benchmark assessment for learning and to guide instruction.

Second grade students and students new to MCPS are globally screened in the spring for identification in the gifted and talented program.
