All About Electing a 

President of the United States  

 


1. Every four years in November, the people of the United States choose a President.  


2. The next Presidential Election will be in 2016. 


3. To vote, you have to: 
   be at least 18 years old 
   be a United States citizen 


4.  A person who is in jail cannot vote.   

 

5. To be President you have to  
    be born in the United States  
    be at least 35 years old.  


6. You can only be President for eight years (twice for  four-years). 


7. The President can be a man or a woman of any race or any religion. 


8. It takes a lot of work and many months to be elected president. The candidates for each political party try to get people to vote for them by giving speeches, marching in parades, shaking hands, giving interviews, and paying for ads on TV, radio, in newspapers, and on the internet. They post videos online and use websites to share their ideas. They even use Twitter to get their message to the voters. Volunteers put up signs, banners, posters, and make phone calls to convince people to vote for their candidate.  


9. In the United States, there are two large political parties:  
Republican          Democratic 



10. The candidates have debates where they answer questions about the issues that are important to the people in our country. The debates are shown on television and lots of people watch. The debates help voters decide who to vote for. 

                                              


11. After a President is elected, he or she is sworn in, in Washington, D.C.
