Title: The Lion's Paw
Author: Robb White
Call Number: F WHI
Summary: Penny and Nick are young orphans who have given up all hope of finding a new family. They run away to the sea where they meet up with Ben, a teenager who is mourning his father, a World War II POW. Ben's uncle wants to sell Ben's father's sailboat, and the three youngsters take the boat and run away to an island off the Florida Gulf coast. The three face great obstacles in getting away, have run-ins with angry alligators, and have to face a deadly storm in order to escape being caught and returned home. An excellent read for intermediate readers, a wonderful book to read to your kids or class.
Why should they read it? If you like adventure, boats, nature, seashells, or stories about kids facing challenges…this is the perfect book! I thought it was awesome that they had the opportunity to sail in a sailboat, be independent (no grown-ups) and be responsible (good choices). The storm made me nervous. The island sounds beautiful-I want to go there and maybe you will too! And…what is the significance of the Lion’s Paw???
