Dear Olney Parents/Guardians,
I would like to welcome each of you to the 2018-2019 school year at Olney Elementary School. I am
proud to serve this community and look forward to many years of working collaboratively with you to
ensure student success!
Throughout the summer, the staff has been working and planning to ensure a great start for each child.
We’ve spent time learning about our students, analyzing student performance data, and meeting with
parents. We have met together to develop schedules, to review and update school policies and
procedures, and to build professional relationships.
This year we will continue our professional development in cultural competence and continue to study
and implement student discourse across all curricular areas, including Social Emotional Learning. On the home page of our website under "Important School Info Available Here" you will find:

Consistent communication will occur through the Principal's Newsletters which will be posted on our
OES webpage monthly. I encourage you to become a member of our PTA. Your attendance at PTA
meetings is an important part of learning about our school. PTA newsletters come home once a month
electronically and detail important information regarding programming and events.
Parents and students in Grades K–5 are invited to attend our Open House on Friday, August 31st from
9:15-10:15 am. This will be an advanced opportunity for your child to meet his/her teacher, other Olney
staff members and students, and to tour our facility. Our Open House is designed to reduce beginning
of the year anxiety and to help your child prepare emotionally for the start of school and enjoy the
excitement of a new start! Our Open House is not like Back-To-School Night. Teachers are still busy
preparing and planning for the opening of school. It is not a time to conduct a conference with teachers.
Instead, enjoy a walk through the school, a brief visit to your child’s classroom and casual conversation
with staff about the upcoming school year.
Our Back-to-School Night for parents will be Wednesday, September 12th. During this time, staff
members will be introduced, and a variety of school-based initiatives and data will be shared. Parents
should report to the classrooms.
The first day of school for students is Tuesday, September 4th from 9:00 am-3:25 pm. The late bell
rings at 9:00am. On the first day of school, encourage your child to ride the bus to help establish a
routine. Upon arrival students will go to their morning line-up locations. Our staff will be on duty to
help children locate their line-up positions, their classrooms, and to answer questions. Extra staff will be
available to assist kindergarten students acclimate to our school and classroom routines. We want to
ensure that students, parents, guardians, grandparents and all well-wishers get off to a terrific start.
Please look for several pieces of important information to go home with your child/children on the first
day of school.
