These levels represent the 85th percentile based on the 1985 School Population Fitness Survey. To see qualifying standards go to the following website and select "85th percentile":

Exercise and Brain Power

Want better grades and SAT scores? Listen to your PE teacher!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

According to the March 26, 2007 issue in Newsweek, exercise has now been scientifically linked to increased intelligence. One study shows that an aerobic workout regimen will actually grow new nerve cells in the brain.  This was once thought to be impossible. Another study shows that an increase in aerobic exercise also “staves off the beginning of Alzheimer disease and other cognitive disorders”.  Although these are thought of as “old people diseases,” research also says that “exercise has the ability to increase brain potential and has a more lasting effect on brains that are still developing” This includes Tilden students’ brains!

Due to all the new studies linking exercise and brain power, some states are now making a minimum of a half hour of PE every day mandatory in every school district for grades K-8.  It has become a state law in some areas. I guess Maryland is a little slow in reading the new data?
